I certainly am of two minds about this.. the "guest worker provision" was horrible and very scary way to turn folks into indentured servants, yet I wan the to pass some comprehensive legislation so folks like Chip Rogers can go away and shut the "f up.
Arrgh, so much for the "secret" deal.. Wonder that happens to the trade deal now...
Don't be fooled. It's the gift that keeps giving for the Right Wingers. They had no intention of supporting anything this year.
Call me cynical but I think this is part of their wedge issue plan for 08.
Yes but it's dividing the RW more than us.
It's dividing the Republican party, not necessarily the right wing. There is a difference, very slight right now, but there is one.
Democrats are not all on the same page with this issue either.
They will beat us over the head next year about not being able to 'lead' congress on 'comprehensive immigration reform'.
this is a huge wedge issue for dems. do we go with Unions or what the party wants. its really not an easy call and it shows how, unfortunately, the Unions have lost power in the us...
Unions need to change, fast. It is a pity that the bargaining power of labor is tied up in people who don't seem to recognize that the game has changed and they need to change with it. Their current course of action could hurt employees for years by bringing a stigma to the simple act of organizing employees into a negotiating block.
MOTS, im a member of a Union, its not Unions alone that are hurting themselves.
granted some of the afl-cio leadership in recent years has blown donkey balls to put it nicely (hence the change to win folks who are doing good work) but when you look at the changing work sector its going more towards the SEIU people not the USW. in addition the Unions that are growing and still part of the AFL will be the ones that start organizing TAs and other non represnted groups.
and i havent even touched on outsourcing.
The market does not support the type of work the unions are currently doing. I mean that from a marketing standpoint and an economic one. They should be organizing people like accountants where there is a higher bar to entry in the occupation.
Does anyone have a list of those that voted for cloture but not the bill itself? Should have at least 18 people on it.
I only saw one- Johnson..
go here. maybe I missed it.
