New Poll Finds Young Americans leaning Left
Here is the article, and here is the .pdf with all the results.
One of the interesting smaller results here is Hillary’s 43% negative in this group. How did that happen exactly? A U.S. Senator doesn’t really do that much to raise anyone’s ire, that’s why it is so tough to unseat an incumbent, and only people in New York would have heard anything about that anyway. So this must be either from her time as first lady (when the subjects of the poll were between the ages of 2 and 21) or second hand information from misogynistic uncles and radio talk show hosts. But this underscores the problem Hillary has that nobody seems to want to address: lots of people hate her. Will that hate make it harder to elect her? And if she wins, will her presidency be more like Bush’s then the government we all claim to want (bipartisanship) because of the animus on both sides?

Part of the problem is the ‘dynasty’ issue. Bush,Clinton,Bush,Clinton.
They want real change. A new face with new ideas. Obama is hugely popular with the under 26 crowd and I think this is part of the reason why.
I’m nearly 27 (and apparently about to age out of being a “young” American) and so perhaps I can clarify where these high negatives of Hillary Clinton come from.
Bill Clinton’s tenure as President occurred when I was 12 – 19. And what I did hear during those “formative” teenage learning years – HILLARY IS THE DEVIL THE DEVIL THE DEVIL. That’s all the Republican Congress talked about on the news.
My parents, who both voted for Clinton twice, never discussed really politics at home.. so most of what I garnered was from the “mainstream” media.
And I have to say that I still have a somewhat negative reaction to Hillary, not sure why, but perhaps it’s because first impressions are hard to improve upon.
That being said, sndeak is also right. While I would love Hillary “the devil” to become President, I also want someone NEW.
Maybe we young-uns hate Hillary because we are media savvy and can understand when someone is a bit, shall we say … two-faced? It’s also pretty ridiculous to say that Hillary is not a national figure. First Ladyship and the mediablasts from the Right have more than insured that.
And true, she has been dragged through the mud for a *long* time. I guess on the plus side, that means the negatives are pretty well saturated. Problem is that if both the right and the left wing base hate her, what chance does she have? Aside from brainwashing the public with that bijillion dollars she is raising (which with a new relaxation or two of McCain-Feingold may make SuperDuper Tuesday superduper nasty) I guess.
Tell me how someone can wave around Hillary-care as her big issue when she has been pocketed by insurance and big pharma, and the strongest thing she is now willing to say is that we should electronify our records.
i dont know, i think young voters dislike hillary for the same reason any other age group might.
and i dont think the base dislikes hillary, if they did she wouldnt beleading polls.
Thank you I_R_E!
This “everyone hates Hillary” chorus is getting tired. It reminds me of what Yogi Bear said: Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.
Obviously many people are willing to support Senator Clinton’s candidacy. As of last quarter she had raised considerably more than any other candidate. Most polls show her in the lead among Dems.
If you don’t want to support her that’s fine. But, instead of beating up on her will you PLEASE tell us why we should support whoever it is you prefer over Senator Clinton? I am so tired of this “she’s so “this” or “She’s never done “that”.
Catherine, do you realize what you jsut did? You set about the apocalypse. ive defended BforD and you thanked *me* for something i said here. whoa…
gonna let this set in for a second…
Oh yes, I_R_E, I was very aware of what I set in motion there…
I suspect team Clinton entered this contest with their eyes wide open. They know what they have to overcome and presumably they have a plan to change people’s minds. From a spectator point of view, I think the campaign is fascinating. An epic battle that has been brewing for years between the VRWC and the Clinton machine.
