In a sign that there might be hope for the TSA yet, federal aviation authorities have decided to lift the ban on cigarette lighters on airplanes. Kip Hawley, assistant secretary for the Transportation Security Administration, admitted in an interview that "Taking lighters away is security theater . . . It trivializes the security process."
The policy change goes into effect on Aug. 4, and applies only to disposable butane lighters, like Bics, and refillable lighters, like Zippos. Torch lighters, which have thin, hotter flames, will continue to be banned.
Now, Mr. Hawley, can we have our liquids and gels back too, please?
