India Elects First Female President

By Bernita on July 21, 2007 2:29 PM | Comments (1)

Pratibha Patil, 72 yrs. old, was elected the first woman president of India. Patil received 65.82 percent of the votes cast by national lawmakers and state legislators.

Yeah! India!!

Patil doesn't seem like she'll be a quiet figurehead. She has already said that "Indian women should abandon head scarves" and women in her country believe that she will help boost their standing in society.

Not to diminish President Patil's accomplishment, but don't forget India's first female Prime Minister: Indira Ghandi served as Prime Minister of India for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and for a fourth term from 1980 to 1984.
