It's simple. Don't be influenced.

My name is Catherine. And I am a voter.

I am often reminded of the following exchange from the film, The American President.

ROBIN: I think the important thing is not to make it look like we're panicking.
SHEPHERD: See, and I think the important thing is actually not to be panicking.
Most often, I think of this moment during political discussions around campaign contributions. Today it has come up in the comments on another thread here concerning Dale Cardwell, candidate for US Senate here in Georgia. Mr Cardwell has pronounced that he will not accept contributions from Political Action Committees. His reasoning is explained here:
Washington politicians are addicted to the money supplied by special interests and political action committees. They've made an art of saying what it takes to get elected, then working full time on tax breaks and special legislation that benefit their largest contributors. As your Senator, I will: Take NO MONEY FROM SPECIAL INTEREST PAC's.

I believe that we tread on dangerous territory when we make blanket statements such as this. The assumption here is that all PAC's are expecting a quid pro quo exchange when they make contributions. I believe we do a huge disservice to labor unions, non-profit PAC's, and even the corporate PAC's by making such assumptions.

Do I believe that some special interests have too much influence in our government? Absolutely. However, this is the way the game is play NOW. It makes good ink to refuse these contributions. But, it's like playing baseball without a bat. No way one can win that game. Mr Cardwell may I suggest that you play the game by todays rules and once you get elected, work to change the rules?

So, the key, in my mind goes back to the above quote from The American President, rephrased for these purposes:

CANDIDATE: I think the important thing is not to make it look like we're being inflenced by special interests.
ME: See, and I think the important thing is actually not to be influenced by special interests.

Take the money. Don't fall for guilt by association.

What about a simple "I will not take any money from PACs that have done a disservice to Georgia citizens". Don't know which ones have, but heck it makes it seems like the dude is going to protect us. Heck, GW ran and won on the "pretend I'm gonna protect ya" them - twice.

JerryT [TypeKey Profile Page]:

If politicians are making promises in return for that money, then maybe they shouldn't take it. But taking the money is just the symptom. The problem is the promise. If anyone ever questioned a PAC contribution, all a candidate would have to say is that PACs would get no special treatment. In fact, if a PAC gave me money, they should be on notice that I will have to look extra hard at any legislation that would affect them to avoid even the appearance of impropriety.

I agree with what has been said, but here is my "issue" and that is, as a person who gives generously to PAC's and depends on them to advocate for me while I work full time, volunteer and can't be in DC all time am I an "enabler" to the "addiction" and therefore also deserving of his contempt and scorn? Catherine touches on this, but honestly I will add to her voice on this. "Stale" is way off base and insulting. Not only is he incredbly naive to think it's Mr Smith goes to Washington circa 1950. Wake up dude, you gotta be in it to win it, otherwise your just screaming from the sidelines.. Huh? What's that you say.. ooooh really can't hear ya...
