Chicago - YKos - Day 1

By Bernita on August 1, 2007 6:47 PM | Comments (7)

OK, I'm here in the Windy City.

The day started out really well. I was packed and dressed like 5 hours before my flight - this occurrence has never happened before. Arrived at Hartsfield Airport early enough to even have lunch.

Wore the Mid-Fulton Democrats gear on the flight:

Yeh, I'm going au naturale with the hair at the YKos convention. That was way too much hair to be traveling with :)

United Airlines will definetely receive some repeat business from me - 1. at Hartsfield they are located on the T-Concourse. No long lines and cranky security people. 2. I arrived in Chicago 30 minutes early.

OK getting to the baggage claim area at O'Hare takes a long, long walk. Man, they should invest in a train system or something. While taking the long hike you are treated to some crazy visuals to get your mind off the fact that this is a long damn walk.

The 1 day taxi strike is over. I think 4 guys went on strike but the other 800 cab drivers didn't follow their lead. Having the whole team on board is mighty critical when calling for a "strike".

Arrived at the QUAD, which is in the University Center building. University Center is just steps from Columbia College Chicago, DePaul University and Roosevelt University. It is also steps from the Chicago Public Library and 1 1/2 blocks from the lake.

I'm staying here with 3 others in the Chicago 17, including Paul Delehanty (kidoakland). There are 4 separate bedrooms and 1 large living/kitchen area.

Ballah!! Very nice, eh?

Oh here's some of the views. Yes, Dorothy we are in urban America fer sure. Jesus visuals are alive and mighty large.

Not sure how this Georgia Peach is gonna sleep with all the melodic urban sounds: firetrucks, ambulances, car horns, and yes, elevated subway trains. The Red Line is right under our quad - you can hear it and we're on the 12th floor!

Mind you I live on a dead end street in Atlanta with the average homeowner's age of 72 years old. Not a lot of wild and crazy parties happening on my block in the 'hood. One can still sleep to the sounds of crickets. Occassionally some fool will act up, but it is mostly quiet.

Off to shower and attend the PFAW party. I will post all party events at the bar - Tondee's Tavern.

This what I like to see!! Yeah, O'Hare's got issues doesn't it?? Love your pad...

I'm glad that you got there safe and sound. I look forward to reading about the convention from your blog posts! Have Fun!

You go, Nita! I wish you could be here this weekend for the meeting and GADCC dinner, but will be looking forward to seeing how much you learn/get out of participating in this convention!

Nice digs, too!

Have a blast!

Future reference for anybody flying into Chicago: fly into Midway, which has become a nice little airport in recent years. CTA (Chicago's transit system) runs a rail line there.

The only other time I flew into Chicago was in early 1999 en route to Arizona, and O'Hare was a nightmare by comparison. I almost missed my connecting flight.

I am so glad you took a picture of that "Jesus Saves" sign. I saw it from the window of the train and wanted to get a picture, but wasn't able to. I want a sign like that in my living room.

Years ago in NYC someone did a small alteration to a big ass Jesus Saves sign, by adding, "but Moses invests".

It stayed like that for months. I'm not even sure the church people wanted to change it.

So thats what I say in my head every time I see one of those signs..

I can't believe you didn't get your hair done and your nails did. Seriously, that's what I contributed for.

Oh well. No need to go all out for the computer nerds...
