From Bernita, who's driving back from SC and asked me to post.
Is this a statewide Georgia law? Traveling through Thomson, GA (20 minutes from Augusta) and stopped at a local BP gas station. As I was purchasing a candy bar, I saw this sign:

I asked the clerk what was it about and she said they never sell alcohol on election day. I asked was this a statewide law or just in Thomas. She said she didn't know.
Ok so one of ya'll election lawyers let me know if this is a statewide law. Cause if it is then it is broken every Election Day in Atlanta.

It is a local ordinance.
Actually, I'm pretty sure that's a state law. People might get zooted and vote Libertarian!
WHOOPS! I was wrong! GBP is correct. It's governed by local ordinance. Maybe I'm zooted. Maybe. Yeah right.
I looked at strange alcohol laws last year for a blog post, and a couple of states do prohibit sale of alcohol on election day statewide, but Georgia is not one of them. Strangely enough, I seem to remember that South Carolina is.
I could've sworn around these parts it had to do with something like within 200 yards of a polling place, or some such measurement.
Oh, but not around these parts. I must've purchased some alcohol when I thought that.
Sec. 10-210. Sale on election days.
Pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 3-3-20(b), the sale of alcoholic beverages on election dates is authorized.
(Code 1977, § 14-2144)
But in Savannah it's 250 feet.
