Pike nurseries + drought = Chapter 11

By Ataru Atlanta on November 15, 2007 8:06 AM | Comments (2)

Pike Family Nurseries, approaching the level of "Atlanta Institution" after 49 years, has filed for bankruptcy as a direct result of freefalling sales as the drought drags on. They're keeping the doors open for now, but I don't see things really improving much for them unless Sonny has a lot more rain mojo than I think he does.

Home Depot + Lowes = Chapter 11.2

These places contributed as much if not more to the the Pike decline, especially since HD started opening up yard/ladscaping centers like the one on South Cobb Drive.

It's bad news. A friend who is a landscape architect told me today that 60% of the businesses in Atlanta that deal with this type of industry have gone under so far.

You can get plants dirt cheap, but what good is it to get them at the bargain basement price if you can't water them.

Oh that's right...just pray for rain...
