I think the icon just about sums up the news that Pat Robertson is supporting Giuliani for President.
Pat Robertson, the television evangelist and Christian Coalition founder, endorsed Republican White House hopeful Rudy Giuliani for president when the two men appeared together at the National Press Club in Washington on Wednesday.Robertson said he decided to endorse Giuliani because he was “a proven leader who is not afraid of what lies ahead and who will cast a hopeful vision for all Americans.”
Perhaps Robertson realizes that as long as Giuliani appoints “strict constructionist” judges, his pro-choice stance isn’t really relevant.

Giuliani’s no more “pro-choice” now than he is “pro-gay” – in addition to his support for judges like Scalia, he supports every abortion regulation under the sun; he’s the TRAP candidate.
But even if he weren’t, I don’t think Robertson would have struggled with this endorsement. More than anything else, fundamentalists like him want a brutal dictator to punish the heathens, and Rudy is certainly that.
As long as they’re both porcine sellout assclowns, their supposed political leanings don’t really matter. I can’t imagine that just because Pat Robertson sold out evangelicals are going to put aside their real unhappiness with Giuliani. Giuliani could claim he would appoint Billy Graham to SCOTUS and I really don’t think your average right wing nut would give a flying F. I think this endorsement is a real positive development for us.
Despite what this endorsement may mean, I think that a Giuliani nomination sort of puts all those social issues that we’ve gotten hammered with over the past decade off the table. And for that reason I hope he wins the GOP nomination, and I think he has always been the frontrunner, given his leads in just about every other state other than Iowa and South Carolina. And then I hope the Democratic candidate beats his ass.

First, I agree with Drew that Giuliani is not all that pro-choice because he keeps insinuating that he’ll appoint judges that will restrict abortion.
Second, I also agree with Decaturguy that the wedge social issues (abortion, gay marriage) won’t have much of an impact because Giuliani is perceived by many on the right to be pro-choice and pro gay marriage.
Does it strike anyone else as odd that Robertson and other religious leaders on the right are not getting behind Huckabee?
Huckabee has been rising in the polls and he’s normally near the top in debate performance.
It’s just surprising to me.
Either way, I think social issues will still play a big role for many voters, even if Rudy is the nominee. Social conservatives could look to a third party.
