Lord knows you have all ponied up more than your fair share of dollars for Democratic political organizations and candidates, but don't forget about the many worthy 501(c)(3) charities that need your dough too. Like the retailers, this is the time of year when many nonprofits count on raising enough money to see them through the lean times. A few of my favorite charitable groups include:
Atlanta Community Food Bank - who can argue with feeding hungry people? The ACFB has a terrific track record of efficient use of donors funds and community building. Plus, have you read all the accounts of shortages at food banks this year?
American Friends Service Committee - I heart Quakers. The AFSC has promoted peace and social justice throughout the world since 1917.
Natural Resources Defense Council - They use "law, science, and activism" to protect the planet. Also, they personally give cardio-pulmonary resuscitation to drowning polar bears.

I also suggest Democrats Work, mainly because they are doing great work here in Georgia. Hats off to Jason and Thomas for building a strong organization in a very short time.

In looking over the links above, I found only two that offer a "gift donation". As someone who is currently painfully aware of just how much junk I own, I'd rather give or get donations to worthy causes for Christmas.
I'm not sure what the family would make of a donation to the Eff, so the Atlanta Community Food Bank will benefit, unless Democrats Work rolls out a gift plan in the next week or two.

I'm fond of the Heifer Foundation. There is just something so cool about giving or receiving a cow or chickens for Christmas.

I'm a Quaker, and want to point out the FCNL, too, needs contributions, in addition to the AFSC.
They send out political updates on the issues they're working on in the Legislature, and deserve a google from all my fellow social justice activists that I know are all over this blog... they have helped all manner of folks, including Quakers all over the country point and click their opinions to their elected officials, and are a D.C. presence for peace... and a lot of other issues most of us care deeply about.
