Republican Outrage of the Week
By Tim Shiflett for The Kudzu Vine
February 17, 2008

Well, this has been making the rounds for some time, now. But, since John McCain has apparently wrapped up the Republican nomination, then the subject of just who his running mate might be has come to the forefront. And, since the AJC ran an article about this yesterday, I thought it would be a good time to talk about it.

Speculation is running amok. This name or that name is the subject of speculation. But, this name? Sonny Perdue? Oh, gee. Why?

Oh, I know what they’re saying. McCain is not that well liked in the South, so a Southern Governor would help. And, Perdue can raise some money. And, Perdue has executive experience. And, Perdue is popular with the Evangelicals. And, this, and that.

Well, first of all, I have to think that the GOP nominee had better do okay in the South, or he’s beaten, anyway. And, if a Southern Governor is what you desire, then why not someone like Mike Huckabee, or even Charlie Crist? Why pick a guy from a state you’re supposed to win, anyway?

And, a guy with executive experience is what’s desired? Well, wouldn’t you at least want someone with accomplishments? What has Sonny Perdue done? Someone out there please name for me one landmark piece of legislation that he has shepherded through his own Republican Legislature.

Also, I have to wonder if any of the National pundits have really had a look at Sonny Perdue? As those of us in this state know, he would bring a lot of baggage with him, such as the shady land deals, etc.

And, he’s a Party-switcher. While that isn’t such an obvious big deal in this state anymore, it could be with a Republican base, who might not even be aware of that fact. Because they know, and I know, that Party-switchers are not true believers. They switch for convenience, and for their own selfish ends. Sonny Perdue is no more a Republican than he ever was a Democrat.

And, let’s just chew on this angle. Could you all just imagine a Vice-Presidential candidate named Sonny? Could you just picture what the Late-Night comics would do with that one?

And, what would that show the nation about the state of the GOP if John McCain and Sonny Perdue were on the platform at the GOP Convention, waving to the cameras? Would that look like change? Or, the future? No, it would like what it is; a Party behind the times, and out of step with America.

I know I’m fairly outraged that anyone, anywhere would even consider Sonny Perdue for a National Ticket. And, if I’m John McCain, I’d be a little miffed if my staff even brought him up.

So, just for this one week, I won’t call this the “ Outrage of the Week”. Because, if the GOP standard-bearer even entertains thoughts of sharing the National stage with Sonny Perdue, I’m gonna call this one “John McCain’s Outrage of the Week”.

I understand and agree with how ridiculous it would be for McCain to pick Perdue as a VP, but using geography as a factor in picking a running mate is overrated.

When in the last 30 years, has a VP helped swing a state over to his/her party that they weren't going to just win anyway? At most, I'd say Gore '96.

I think McCain and Obama (I'm being presumptive here, yes) should concentrate on just picking the best person without regard to their home state/region.
