Black Leader, a Clinton Ally, Tilts to Obama

MILWAUKEE — Representative John Lewis, an elder statesman from the civil rights era and one of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s most prominent black supporters, said Thursday night that he planned to cast his vote as a superdelegate for Senator Barack Obama in hopes of preventing a fight at the Democratic convention.

Mr. Lewis, who carries great influence among other members of Congress, disclosed his decision in an interview in which he said that as a superdelegate, he could not go against the wishes of the voters of his district, who overwhelmingly supported Mr. Obama.

The NY Times also reports that Congressman David Scott has jumped ship to Obama. No big surprise there, but I’ll confess to being stunned by the news about Lewis, even though I know he’s taken a lot of heat in recent weeks. While the majority of voters in the 5th did vote for Obama (75%), not everyone did. We still don’t have the final numbers, but by my math Clinton won 3 Delegates in the 5th. Are 25% of John Lewis’ constituents now irrelevant? As one of those 25%, I am disappointed to think the answer seems to be yes.

Won’t those of you who supported Clinton in the 5th still get roughly 25% if not more of the pledged delegates awarded for the district?

Why does Andre have the number of delegates broken down when the DPG District chairs don’t?
