Very Sad News

Cobb Democrats,

I have some sad news to share. Many of you know that Herb Butler has been battling cancer. I received a call that our dear friend passed away yesterday morning. I do not have any information on arrangements.

Even with his illness, Herb continued to fight for working people and the Democratic Party. As you know, it had become a tradition to end our monthly breakfast meetings with a few words from Herb. Many of you had sent Herb cards and when we last spoke, Herb told me how very appreciative he was for all of the cards he had been receiving and thanked everyone. He will be missed.

On a personal note, Herb was one of the very few folks in the “old guard” who went out of his way to be welcoming to anyone new to politics. He always had a ready smile, a hug and kind words for everyone’s efforts. He was an enthusiastic member of many organizations and made enormous contributions to all of them. I saw him for the last time at the JJ dinner. I’d tried to find him earlier, but didn’t catch up with him till the very end when we were leaving. Now that I think back on it, I realize he was saying his goodbyes. He told me he loved me, and I said I loved him too. It brings tears to my eyes now as I type.

God speed Herb, you will be sincerely missed.

As soon as I know the arrangements, I will update this post.

First time I met him was at a Cobb Democratic Party meeting. I was so warmed by his rousing speech… a tradition I soon learned was a monthly ritual I always enjoyed. My deepest condolences.

Truly sad news. My thoughts go out to Herb’s family and friends.

I remember the first time I met him – it was at a luncheon held by the Cobb Democratic Women (or was it the Georgia Federation of Democratic Women?). Anyway, Herb was there along with maybe one other man in a room full of iced-tea sipping, salad-nibbling, women-who-lunch. I just remember thinking “you have to be a darn dedicated Democratic man to show up at this…” He sure was.

The State Committee meetings won’t be the same without him.
