Just got my mass-mailer fundraising letter from JM. This is my favorite part: “I am not looking to curry favor with anyone 92% of the time [referring to Saxby’s 92% voting support of Bush] – I am looking to do what is right, what is fair, and what is consistent with the Constitution.” When Jim Martin says it, I actually believe it.

Well said Rural…your story is a perfect example of why so many of us (no matter our democratic bent) adored Jim Martin, and why the “liberal from Atlanta” beat Mark Taylor in EVERY county in Georgia in the number of votes received.

    Smitty,

I supported Jim in 2006 as well. Sure, there are some issues we disagree on, but I’m not just an issues voter. Personality, reliability, and other matters factor into my vote.

    Here’s a little story:

When I served as President of my university’s College Dems organization back in 2006, a friend and I had just restarted the group months earlier and were still getting off the ground. I emailed Jim’s campaign a few times and they always responded and even called me a couple of times, sending us flyers and other items to pass out at orientation.

Months later, Jim had a meeting planned in the area and his campaign called and said they’d love to stop by.

They came by and although we only had a couple of days to plan, we had a turnout 30-40 people and the student newspaper covered it (we’re a very small school so the numbers are good).

Anyway, Jim, his wife, and one of his staffers came and met with us for around 90 minutes or so. He gave an amazing speech about his past service in the state legislature and other information about himself. He then went on to discuss healthcare and other important issues. He even took quite a few questions from the audience and did not miss a step.

The campaign followed up a few days later and kept in touch with us until the election was over with.

Like I said, there are social issues that we disagree on, but Jim is a different type of politician. You can tell that he truly believes in what he talks about. He is a genuinely nice guy and the type of politician we need.

Sure, him visiting us and sending us campaign items helped him, but it also helped us.

I dunno, I’m sure someone will laugh or think it’s silly, I just really admire and respect the guy.

Now, if George Hooks (my favorite GA politician) or Jim Marshall ran for US Senate, wow I’d be in a bind, but I can say without a doubt that Jim Martin is miles ahead of any of the other candidates (announced, or “exploring”) that we have in the race.

Jim Martin is someone we can all get behind AND is someone who can win. He probably has a higher name ID than Chambliss (by virtue of the LG run last year.)

Any other Episcopalians out there who might be tempted to join in a chorus of “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow?” 🙂
