Belated congratulations to Tondee’s

icon_beer.jpgI’ve been offline for most of this week and last, but wanted to officially congratulate Jon Flack and Tondee’s Tavern on being selected as the 50 State Blogger Corp representative from Georgia to the Democratic National Convention. I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have represent us than Jon Flack.

Meanwhile, and as usual, there is some controversy regarding the credentialing process. No surprise. Some are alleging racism, other’s elitism, but few mention sexism, even though women are almost never included in these things. Bernita covered this in great detail in posts from YearlyKos that have since been sanitized for your protection and her google results. Whatever the process, nothing changes the fact that Flack deserves this more than any other Georgia blogger, even if he is a straight, white, male.

I’m very much looking forward to reading Flack’s reports (and maybe one or two from our three authors who will be there), from the comfort of my desk chair.

I am Peggy Tondee Smith from Ellaville, GA., Schley County. Who is the person who commented on my being from Schley County and what county are you from? Peter Tondee of Tondee’s Tavern was my fifth removed grandfather.

    Peggy,

I never thought I’d see someone from Schley County on here. Cool. I’m in the county right near y’all.

Peggy, the name comes from an actual Tavern in Savannah run by Peter Tondee.

Events of that summer, however, made Tondee’s Tavern the hub of revolutionary sentiment. On August 10, 1774, despite a ban from the governor, delegates from every parish convened at the tavern, where Tondee himself stood at the door with a list to keep out intruders. Though failing to elect delegates to the Continental Congress, the meeting passed resolutions and organized as a general committee to correspond with other colonies.

    The whole story is here:

I’m interested in where the name Tondee came from. My maiden name is

Tondee. Maybe it’s a relative. I am Peggy Tondee Smith originally from Ellaville, Ga.

Yes, congratulations to Flack, et al for the nod, and for all their contributions. Cover-It-Live is so damn cool – maybe you’ll be able to do some of that from Denver?

And, just FYI for our readers. We at BfD were tempted to apply for DNC Convention credentials, but decided not to, so we’re very pleased that our friends and fellow progressives (well, mostly) at Tondee’s will be representing in Denver.
