How do I know this? Well... cause he must be living on it.
Ok, let me back up... last night I attended the East Cobb Civic Association's Candidate Forum, this was the first of two they sponsor. The ECCA is basically the "bitch" of the Cobb Chamber and Sam Olens. I braced myself for yet another packed house and a sticker gauntlet for Saxby and Congressman Tom Price (memories of the 2006 ECCA event still very vivid).
I was running a bit late, and arrived at 7 pm when it was due to start. First thing I noticed, a complete lack of any campaign chum outside... no sticker toadies, not one yard sign, not one decoration anywhere. I survey the parking lot, noticed all the cars were oddly familiar, Rand Knight mobiles, Hillary stickered cars, anti war bumper stickers, 2 Prius...I deliberately drove my "DL" car and not the Obama Lewis war wagon, which clearly wasn't necessary.
Okaaaay what's going on here...
I walk in and it's practically empty! Just to understand how shocking this is, in 2006 this place was PACKED. Every seat taken with folks standing in the back. 2008 it's less than 50 folks and fully one third were candidates and candidate supporters or staff. The next biggest group of attendees were Democrats. Pinch me I much be dreaming- I am still at the ECCA right? Not the Cobb County Democratic breakfast right? Dr's Farohki, Beverly McMurray, Bill Bolton, Mike Holzknecht. It's at this point I abandon my plan to be Kimberly, I mean what's the point.
I texted a couple folks, cause I still can't believe it. Where are the the Republican voters? Are they so confident of winning no one needs to show up? Or is it more than that? I ask myself this multiple times over the course of the evening. I still don't know the answer.
I won't tire you with the rundown of all the candidates and their speeches. Suffice to say that most of our folks did ok, and the opposition was predictably well, predicable. "Nothing's wrong under the Gold dome, it's the media making it more dramatic than it actually is, Speaker Richardson is doing the best job under the circumstances, organized chaos, nothing to see here folks move along..."
But then we get to Judson, now, it's one thing to try to make the best of a bad situation, but seriously he's either on the pipe, or Kool-aid must have installed a spigot at his house. Gee and I just thought all his ideas came from ALEC.
According to the State Senator from District 32, things are going really well for Georgia, schools are great, folks have no problem with getting Health care, transportation is completely fine, and the money quote " we grabbed the bull by the horns early in the session" getting the water issue under control. Oh and according to him, if it wasn't for the pesky Army Corps of Engineers why there'd be a swimming pool in every back yard and a hot tub to go with it! It's at this point I realized I've slipped into a parallel dimension. It's an unbelievable amount of hypocrisy and "blue sky" being blown up our collective butts... But I digress.
He began his comments with this quote... "Real change requires real change... Good grief-a rose is rose? Really, really this is how you want to play? But it gets better ( I sh*t you not) he then lectures us all on how "we" need to work on our Values and Principles" Again, my mouth hangs open, oh no he didn't... honey... you might want to check yourself first, I'm just saying!
Zinger of the night, goes to Dr. Chris Cameron who is running against Judson, he points out that the votes needed to pass the transportation bill were not cast by the Republican Senators from Cobb, 2 who are in the room. Oh snap! The crowd, such as it is, does at least "acknowledge" the smack down, by making a slight seat shift to the right or left depending.
The evening wears on, and on... I could call out much much more dumbassery, but you will just have to trust me when I say, be afraid, be very afraid of 2009 under the Gold Dome. Not sure if its the water, the A/C, too much asbestos? I dunno something is seriously whack.
I feel some obligation to give credit where credit is due, and that is to Sen. Chip Rogers. First, he was the only candidate in the whole bunch who graciously thanked the organization who sponsored the event. He also had done his homework and specifically mentioned how much of the legislation he worked on was for the good of all Georgians and not partisan. Only he appears to have grasped the "mood" of the room. He lists the bills he sponsored, such as the Anti- Bully Bill, Dog Fighting, and pivoted well off the immigration issue-SB529. He gave a nice shout out to Dale Cardwell. I will continue to disagree with a good deal of his views, but I will say he was the pro in the room last night.
The second in the series is Monday the 30th, I may have to cancel on Jim Martin and attend. This stuff is scary but highly entertaining.
I am working on a companion piece to this post. If you are a candidate you really need to read it. It's all about how not to look like a dumbass at these events. Some. Of. You. Desperately. Need. To. Learn. This.

Ugh! I remember vividly what it was like living in East Cobb. I am however pleasantly encouraged by the lack of enthusiasm you mentioned on the right in that area - I think I would have to clean my eyes out to believe that too!
