Rand Knight scores another big endorsement

National Education Association (NEA) Endorses Rand Knight for U.S. Senate

Today, U.S. Senate candidate Rand Knight received the endorsement of the National Education Association (NEA).

"I am honored to receive this endorsement," Knight said. "I was raised by my mother, a public school teacher, who instilled in me an appreciation of both a good education and of the people who contribute to educating students every day." Rand Knight has a Ph.D. in Ecosystems Analysis and is the first candidate in history with a Ph.D. in any biological science to run for the U.S. Senate.

The Board of Directors of the Georgia Association of Educators (GAE) recommended Knight's candidacy to the National Education Association (NEA) Fund for Children and Public Education, who just this week voted on, and unanimously approved, the recommendation to endorse Rand Knight for U.S. Senate in Georgia.

Knight, who proposes to fund education with new revenues created through the development of jobs in areas such as renewable energy and mass transit, took a hard stance on the No Child Left Behind Act. "No Child Left Behind was never fully funded and resulted in millions of Georgia's children being left behind," Knight said. "Teachers are required to teach to a test score and training students to think critically, analytically and independently is not rewarded. Additionally, we're punishing underperforming schools instead of helping them."

Jeff Hubbard, president of the GAE cited Knight's commitment to strengthening public education as one of the key reasons he was endorsed.

"Rand Knight's education positions are forward-looking and address education as a lifelong process," Hubbard said. 'Knight has made clear that education will be at the top of his list of priorities in the U.S. Senate, and he demonstrated a dedication to ensuring everyone in the United States receives the education to which they are entitled. As our next U.S. Senator from Georgia, Rand Knight will sponsor legislation that invests heavily in Early Childhood education. He has fresh ideas and the passion to persuade other legislators to provide our schools with the funding they need to be successful and helping college and post-graduate students finance their education."

Gentlemen, let the games begin...12 days left.

Hmm that means in the past few weeks, endorsements from organizations with members goes something like this...Rand Knight 3, everyone else, 0.

M_Combest [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Don't say I didn't warn everyone - no one thought Rand had a chance - wonder what Jane Kidd is thinking right aboue now...Funny, she wont return my calls about why she is trying to pressure the AFL-CIO to retract thier endorsement of him. In return, he gets another big one.

M_Combest,

There's a different between winning the primary and the general.

Not many people think Rand Knight has a chance in the General.

I know I don't.

Sara Wara [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Am I the only one who still doesn't think he has a real chance in the primary?

I mean I understand why people would say he doesn't have a chance but there comes a point (like when you secure endorsement after endorsement of key parts of the Democratic machine) where you kind of have to go, yea, he has a shot at least.

Well, I think he might have a shot at the primary, though I'd hope the "base" wakes up in time.

As far as the General, I think Martin, Cardwell, and even Jones would fare much better than Knight.

Lanier would probably do better as well.

Saxby's people have to be excited about these endorsements :/

Who cares about beating Saxby, as long as there's a Democratic candidate representing hardcore "progressive" values. who cares about winning?

[Yes, that last part is full of sarcasm]

Let's have a spineless, waffling Democrat who doesn't talk about class issues so they're pegged as a social liberal and completely destroyed (Jim Martin)!

Yeah, that'll work!

Zaid [TypeKey Profile Page]:

And for full disclosure I'm probably voting for Cardwell >_>

M_Combest [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Dear Rural Dem,

funny you should say that- and Hillary had this in the bag a year ago right? Jim Martin is not in this race because he wants to, thats the truth. How can you be so gung ho about a guy without a fire in the belly, cmon man seriousley! Rand has been all over the state for over a year - so we should just hand the victory to Jim Martin??

M_Combest,

Actually, I was an Edwards supporter, not Hillary, so I'm not sure where you're coming up with that.

My ideal candidate is not running, so I'm supporting who I feel is the best candidate out of those running. I'm not "gung-ho" about any of the candidates, so once again, I'm not sure where you're coming up with this stuff.

Rand Knight fails on my character and issues tests. The fake southern accent really annoys me. It gives off an elitist perception. Mainly, he's out of touch with the vast majority of Georgians on social issues.

Dale Cardwell and Jim Martin are the only two candidates who can compete with Saxby. Martin's ability to relate to people will win some voters over, after all, everyone loves to throw out how he received more votes than Mark Taylor. Cardwell's a populist, the type of Georgia Democrat that can win statewide.

If Knight is the Democratic nominee, I predict Saxby will hit near 70%

We're in Georgia, not Massachusetts.

Zaid [TypeKey Profile Page]:

"If Knight is the Democratic nominee, I predict Saxby will hit near 70%

Rand's views are mainstream Georgian on everything except gay marriage or abortion rights.

Maybe you need to stop judging people based on their looks or how they talk and being a rural bigot about all this.

Zaid [TypeKey Profile Page]:

". Mainly, he's out of touch with the vast majority of Georgians on social issues."

So, instead of emphasizing class, economic, foreign policy issues and building the best grassroots network of any candidate across the state, he should just make more bigoted statements about homosexuals to win.

Wow, RuralDem. I don't know if you just really share GOP bigotries or don't have any campaign sense.

Zaid,

My point about the accent is it seems at certain points he's tried to hard. I view it as an attempt to reach out to certain areas of the state and quite frankly, I think it's a messed up thing to do. One video he sounds like Virgil Goode (YouTube is your friend), the next video he talks "normal". If you don't think that's an attempt to pander, then, well, that's fine, we'll have to agree to disagree, but cool it with the "bigot this, bigot that, and stop making fun of people" crap, because I'm not doing that.

I believe others have commented before on how Knight attempts to change up his voice in this video.

It's bothered me ever since I first saw it.

In regards to the other rant of yours:

I'm all for focusing on the economic issues, especially since that's why I consider myself a Democrat.

However, my point to the social issues thing is voters are going to be turned off by his liberal social views.

If you seriously think Saxby will NOT repeatedly use Knight's liberal social views against him, then, well, maybe YOU have no campaign sense.

I have nothing against Knight, I'm simply not impressed, at least, not yet.

And before you start rambling that I'm upset because "my" candidate is not doing well, then, well, I'd remind you that I have no candidate. I have two preferred candidates, but like many others, I'm not really impressed yet. After what Saxby did to Cleland in 2002, you'd think we would have a top tier candidate running. Cardwell, Martin, and Jones are our best choices.

If you think Knight can win with only a socially liberal base and without the other wings of our party, then, well, I have a question for you.

Are you new to Georgia?

Lancellotto [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Alright you two.

First of all, Zaid's "spineless, waffling Democrat who doesn't talk about class issues so they're pegged as a social liberal" was campaigning to revamp Georgia's predatory foreclosure laws (which at the time only mandated a 15-day notice to the homeowner and also didn't require some key disclosures to the homeowner to empower them to negotiate to keep their home) back in 2006, when $2/gallon seemed like a lot to pay for gas. That's leadership.

Jim is also for healthcare, education and a dignified retirement for all seniors. Do you call that a dodge of pocketbook issues in favor of socially "liberal" ones? I mean, at least do your homework.

Here's my question about Rand: What exactly does a union endorsement get you in Georgia? I know I'm stepping on the third rail here -- and Lord knows I love my unions -- but I'm also just wondering if it means as much around here as Rand would like us to believe. (And I have no idea what the unions themselves are thinking in endorsing someone with NO record.)

Fake accents of all stripes bug the heck outta me. It's why I can't watch "The Closer" and half the Hollywood movies set in the South.

Jim's the genuine article. Rand's from Central Casting.

odinseye2k [TypeKey Profile Page]:

However, I can feel for Rand putting on the fake accent. It's what happens when you see a guy like Chambliss able to successfully impugn the honor of a man that surrendered a majority of his limbs to a patently stupid war.

I mean, the guy's got a PhD in the environment from one of my two ala maters. He's way the hell too smart for this state, I am quite afraid.

I really wish the guy had started slightly smaller - I've become increasingly impressed with him over this primary. So much so that I'm going to recommend to all the YDs of my chapter that they look long and hard between him and Martin as the proper choice.

odinseye2k,

Question, are you a grad student, or still an undergrad?

(I'm trying to figure out who you are).

odinseye2k [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Grad. I'm actually kind of curious as to whether I've met you in person myself.

Odin and RD: Yes y'all have.

odinseye2k [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Thanks for bridging the connection, IRE.

A clarification: You have been in the same venue and room before.

Zaid [TypeKey Profile Page]:

1/2 of your campaign funds from trial attorneys in Atlanta.

That's the end of his campaign right there, one ad from Saxby with that in it, good bye spineless Jim Martin.
