Day 3: Emily’s List event

2:08 pm:

OK I made it back downtown to attend the Emily's List event. Big thanks to Beth Hand for getting us tickets. This is not a free event.

Here's the deal, there are no chairs at this event. Yeah, Jules, no chairs. So you have a whole lot of women sitting on the floor waiting until the event starts. Uh, huh I'm sitting on the floor in my light gray suit typing this post. So I will probably not do any live blogging since I'm not holding a laptop in the air and typing.

But I will capture the events and pictures when I get to the Pepsi Center.

2:33 pm:

Gonna try to live blog off the blackberry. The event is about to start. All the women in Congress are flowing in.

2:40 pm:

They just showed a celebration video of Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones. Very moving.

Congresswoman Gail Jones is speaking. She's introducing Ellen Malcolm. Who was already on the stage once to open up the event. Whatevah.

Ellen is saying that Barack Obama is going to take us in a new direction. She believes that both Obamas will help us raise our children better. She just dropped a 2 second plug for Joe Biden. She says that Hillary may not have won but she came out stronger and made us proud.

She says we must use the power of women to create a progressive America.

2:55 pm:

Senator Barbara McCulskey is speaking. Man, she's a tiny little thing - about 4'5" on a good day. She may be tiny but she has a booming voice. She has the crowd live. She just said "I'm not dainty by any means". She's praising Emily's List for helping to elect 31 women of color to Congress. She says that Stephanie Tubbs Jones is looking down on us and saying "don't mourn, organize".

** The internets suck here. My phone keeps losing network connection.

Senator McCulskey is now introducing Hillary Clinton. Crowd goes crazy.

3:03 pm

Senator Clinton is speaking. She is thanking Emily's List for their support. She says that one day that glass ceiling will shatter and its important for women to remember that on women suffrage day.

She says we (Congress) need partners in the White House. Oh my she just said that in January 2009, we need Obama and Biden. Now she's congratulating Michelle Obama and believes she will be a great first lady.

Now she's ripping on McCain about his anti-choice stand. She says the choices can not be clearer.

She is asking all those who worked hard for her to now work hard for Obama/Biden.

Man she is throwing the full unity stuff out there. This is so awesome. Hillary so rocks.

3:14 pm:

Pelosi says that every American is indebted to Hillary for the wonderful campaign she ran. We should say thanks to Hillary over and over again.

She is praising her class of freshman women in Congress. She's now running down the list of everything that Bush has vetoed. She's ripping Bush on SCHIP.

She's now talking about passing the Fair Pay act. She says that if you are talking to women in doubt then tell them about medicaid and how Ted Kennedy left his hospital to cast a vote. Talk to them about Children's insurance and health.

Now she's doing her plug for Obama/Biden. If all else fails when talking to doubters then talk about the economy.

Pelosi says that in order to have victory we need unity and she's glad for the words Senator Clinton said today.

3:27 pm

Christine Grigore is now introducing Michelle Obama.

3:31 pm

Michelle comes on stage. Crowd goes wild.

Now she's thanking Ellen Malcolm for having the vision to support women. Now she's thanking Hillary. Says that no one has been more gracious and open to her than Senator Clinton. She's appluading Clinton for having the courage to run for President.

She's reading off her paper too much. But she's excited in her speech.

She's talking about restoring fairness in America and tying it into the suffragist movement. She says that our country's movement towards equality is not done and we should continue to break through things that impede us.

Now she's doing the "hungry for change" spiel. Says that she knows with every fiber in her body that Barack is going to be an amazing President.

Now she's talking about being a mother. Says the issues that are at stake in this election are not just about politics; they are personal.

Says Barack has been challenging us to work and come together that there is no reason that we can't build the world as it should be. Where women are given equal pay for equal work. Where every women has the choice when to become a parent and no government should have a say in it.

She's fired up talking about the way the world should be. Crowd goes crazy when she says that we need to end this war responsibly.

She says that "if you don't think Barack will need you, then I will need you. I need you to have my back". Crowd claps wildly.

Great talk. Sincerity I believe. There is no doubt that she knows her husband will be a great president.

Phone is about to die. Gotta recharge it when I get to the Pepsi center.

  • Damn! What a great event that must have been. Thank you for the great coverage. Again, you make us all proud.

  • You rock hard, Bernita. I hate to nitpick, but since hers was the first political campaign I ever volunteered for, I need to correct the spelling of Babs' name: it's Mikulski (she being a nice Polish girl from Baltimore, not an Irish lass). :)

  • Bernita, you are fierce. Thanks for taking us along on the journey.

The no chairs deal... reminds me when I attended the 92 inauguration --Tennessee ball. I had NO IDEA that the price of a ticket did not include a chair! If I remember correctly, they cost several thousand.

    Keep making those memories,girl.

  • FOX commentary on this event:

If Pelosi thought electing women to high office was so important then why did she tell HRC to end her campaign before the last primary contests were held. She had a woman, running for high office and worked to undermine her, so her words ring hollow. I agree. Pelosi picked Obama to run and did everything to quash HRC, including announcing in early Spring that Hillary would never be on any DNC ticket because she supports McCain. So I am done with Pelosi. If she wins her race this fall I sure hope she does something besides manage an election and manulipulate the votes. Maybe she could actually do her job and end the war, get health insurance passed and equal pay for women. sorry to be bitter, but this woman fed the media lies, and really hurt HRC, and I am so over her.
