Don’t Use your wireless or Bluetooth at the convention

icon_at.jpg Are they serious? This is the recommendation given by a spokesperson about how to avoid cyber-attacks while at the DNC. Apparently the DNC is trying to protect folks while in the convention itself, but there are fears of attacks outside the hallowed halls. So the following is the advice given:

"They should make sure they don't have wireless devices turned on, make sure they don't have their Bluetooths turned on and that they are very aware of their surroundings,"

LOL. okay. So for those of us that DO want to be connected to the outside world and blog, etc., what are we to do? I admit ignorance on this, so any helpful, non-snarky, advice is welcome. I have McAfee virus protection on my laptop...

  • "We don't anticipate delegates' bringing laptops to the convention," DNC Committee spokesman Damon Jones says. "They may bring them, but they will use them in the hotels to surf the Internet. They aren't trying to connect to the convention hall."

Are they serious??!??! Do they not KNOW the activists who will be delegates?

  • Use firewall software.. McAfee/Norton/Symantec all have them. I think Windows has a firewall built in, at least with Vista.

Your laptop should be set up to not allow any incoming connections.

yeah, that made me guffaw too. I was like, do they have a freakin' clue? (channeling Angry Benson)...

  • Thanks siri!

  • Groan.

This on top of the bone headed blogger hubbub.

So when someone says, well you had to be there, they really men you HAD to BE there, no virtual attendance allowed.

  • That also means turn off sharing of any kind... printer, file, network, etc.

  • I think Siri is right... and besides, if they are worried that Obama's laptop will somehow get Islamic kiddie torture porn on it, then he can leave HIS behind. Office holding delegates, same thing. Talk about overblown.

    Fight the Power Delegates!

  • Wow. I wonder if they have some specific threat or if this is just random paranoia.

Hey, that would be a good name for a band.

  • Just connect to a different network. Get an AT&T card or a verizon card. Don't even bother with the convention network.

  • Apropos of nothing, I just talked with Mayor Daley (he's here for Chicago 2016) and invited GA to his soir√©e on the Tuesday of convention.

    Daley pwns.
