Getting Crunked in Denver

By Bernita on August 11, 2008 11:50 PM | Comments (2)

iconOh my, I just received a partial list of all the parties that are happening during the Denver Convention and I'm just saying that those Democrats know how to party.

Here's a list of some:
Sunday, Aug. 23rd:
* State Delegation Parties
* Friends of New Orleans Reception
* NJDC Reception Honoring the Jewish Delegation
* National Black Caucus Celebration of African American Leaders Reception
* Dialog: City and DJ Spooky (what the heck is a DJ Spooky? Is he kinfolk to Pootah the Young One)
* "Blue Night in Denver" - Blue Dog Coalition (I'm going just for the fun of it. tossing some tequila shots back with Marshall and Barrow)
* Dessert/Champagne Party - Congressional Black Caucus Institute
* America Votes Party
* DNC Top Donors Reception (yeah, this so does not include me or any of my RV mates)

Monday, August 25:
* Sex, Politics, and Cocktails hosted by Planned Parenthood (I'm all over this. RV mate works for PP plus Carol MacDonald will be there.)
* Salute to Hispanic Voters
* DLC Chairman's Dinner Hosted by Harold Ford, Jr.(umm.no!)
* A Salute to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (won't be at this event)
* Strike for Your Rights (at a Bowling Alley)
* Comedy Kabob - hosted by the Arab American Institute (really, was this an appropriate name)
* Bipartisan Policy Center Democratic Party ($10,000 for 5 VIP tickets) (a. what policies are you creating at 9 pm and b. 10k? this better be the place where all the hotties are going to be at)
* Moderate Democrats Late Night (oh yeah, my peeps are in the house)
* Salute to Democratic Governors (well I guess no one will stand on the Georgia podium. hell I will.)

Tuesday, August 26:
* National Women's Political Caucus Delegate reception (should be fun for networking)
* 21st Century Dems reception (maybe our very own Wendy from Rome will be in attendance)
* American Association for Justice honoring Civil Justice Democrats (who are the non-civil justice democrats)
* Salute to American Veterans
* Democratic Attorneys General Association (our very own AG Thurbert Baker is the leader of this group)
* Every Woman Counts Late Night Reception (Oh this is being held at the Cowboy lounge. Nice. I'm a sucker for a man wearing cowboy boots)
* Salute to the Screen Actors Guild (wonder what Dem actor hotties will be here)
* Blue Dog Coalition reception (Round 2 of the tequila shots with Marshall and Barrow)
* Salute to African American voters
* African American Caucus Gala (damnit, got to wear the fancy dress and this requires heels)
* Celebration honoring the New Democratic Coalition (did we have an old one?)
* Concert - Willie Nelson with Jerry Jay Walker
* Rock to Win - Melissa Ethridge - hosted by the Human Rights Campaign
* Big Sky Night - The Montana Party (cowboy heaven)
* Poker at the Ballpark - Individual $500; packages $3500-$7500 (c'mon Grift get on the RV)

Wednesday, August 27:
* Tea Hosted by Nancy Pelosi honoring Women Members of Congress
* Tribute to Ann Richards
* Target's Gala Benefit featuring The Black Eyed Peas (must.find.friends.with.tickets)
* The White House Project 10th Anniversay Celebration
* RIAA One Campaign Party (oh yeah, Kanye West is supposed to perform at one of the RIAA parties)
* DNC Event co-hosted by Jennifer Lopez (who knew Jenny from the Block would also be in Denver)

Thursday, August 28:
* Celebration of Shirley Chisholm (fist up)
* Screen Media Films African American Heritage Brunch
* DSCC Women's Senate Network - Women for Change reception (I bet Hillary will be there)

Lots of events/parties. I hear PDiddy (that is his current name, right?) and Jada and Will Smith are also having parties. Maybe this old lady will be able to get around to a least 1/3 of them.

Need a DFI revision party. We did it once I was approved to go to Denver. Now that I have this party list, it looks like I might have to go in for a second round of approval.

Ok no need to panic...

This is a case of sticking to the basic rules of fashion and nature.

Fashion rule 1: wear what will flatter you and draw attention to your best assets. If after nearly 3 decades some of you still don't know what that is, call me and I will tell ya. This is especially true in the reverse, if the back of your arms swing low enough to touch the back of your knees please DON'T go sleeveless! If you don't own a full length mirror by now, at least stand in front of a big window and review your choices. Ignorance is no excuse, just cause you can't see your back end doesn't mean we are blind! Although, at times I wish I was.

Nature Rule 1: wear what you can comfortably stand and sit in for hours on end. This is extremely important, if you are miserable and uncomfortable in your Dolce & Gabana, everyone will see it on your face. No matter what you spent you will appear to be poorly dressed. Think Gov. Bill Richardson in that first debate, I'm still convinced he looked so miserable because his undies were too tight or something. Comfort and confidence are more attractive that what passes for "fashion" some days, no correction: every day! However this is NOT a pass to wear sweats, violate this rule at your own peril, DFI has her eyes everywhere and I will bust you!

Packing rule: Pack in 3 main color families: Choose a palette like black, blue and white or black tan and white that will save on any extraneous items finding their way into your severely-limited-by-weight-now suitcase. The color families can then be highlighted with punches of other colors and textures as accessories. It will also refine the number of shoes, handbags and jewelry. Lay out all outfits, from underwear to earrings, look for duplicates. You don't need 4 pairs of khakis', you need 2. Assess the shoes, can you pack 4 pair by editing down the extra outfit that is a totally different color family? The answer is almost always yes. If a new outfit requires a one time use handbag, shoes and jewelry you should leave it home.

Nature Rule 2: Do your research on the weather conditions. No need to pack tank tops if the convention rooms will be the temperature of Cindy McCain's face. Conversely it's still summer, don't pack fall items and think your being fashion forward. Appropriateness is just as important as the 3 "F's".

Fashion rule 2: The three "f's" are:
Fit
Fabric
Finish
Examine all choices for this criteria, cheap fabric, bad fit and cheesy finish will mess you up!

Fashion rule 3: Statements not to make
Vintage is for wine not this event
Beaded gowns or shoes.. this is NOT the inauguration yet! That' s in January.
Cheap shoes and handbags are the worst fashion offenses there are.

Fashion/Nature rule 4 Grooming: Yes, you need a hair cut before you go, yes you need your eyebrows waxed, yes you will need a fresh mani-pedi right before it starts ( those of you traveling by RV can probably wait till you get one day out. Stop somewhere civilized and indulge by paying someone to rub you feet and hold your hands. Boys you can do this too!

Fashion rule 5: Accessories: Get some, borrow some & learn to embrace your inner Kenneth J Lane. One attractive necklace can say more about you than a whole outfit. Plus it usually gives folks a way to start a conversation with you, "Oooh I love those earrings" Where did you get them? Great handbag, love that scarf! Two things, you've broken the ice and you get a compliment, what's not to love?

Finally, listen to your friends. If they say you look good, well damn you look good, if they have suggestions please heed them. Catherine and I saw so many tragic train wreaks and fashion victims at the George Michael concert, 99% of them could have been avoided if they had only had some friends to help them out. A real friend will tell you your slip is showing, a fake friend will tell you look good in a drop cloth held up by raffia twine just cause they saw it on Project Runway.

Any specific questions? E-mail me or call me... most everyone here nows how to find me.

With a body like Nita's, I actually think she could pull off a drop cloth held up by raffia twine.

Otherwise, fascinating.
