This is what happens…

when you cancel on David Letterman at the last minute.

P.S. Rumor has it he didn’t really have to go back to D.C., he was actually across the street getting ready for an interview with Katie Couric at CBS.

The campaign said it “wasn’t a night for humor”.

What, McCain was planning to do his Rodney Dangerfield shtick?

Canceling at the last minute was one thing…but when Dave found out that McSame LIED to him… the gloves were OFF. McSame should not have lied to Dave…it was a stupid, stupid move. I think Dave really admired McCain personally, but McCain ruined it… and there’s not like a former awestruck fan who’s been scorned.

If anyone watched the Katie’s interview with Sarah Palin, you’ll see she hasn’t lost her ability to ask hard questions without coming off as mean or condescending. Say what you will about Ms. Couric, but she is one darn good interviewer.

I think the importance of these kinds of moves in very much underestimated. In 1996 I am quite sure I watched Bob Dole as he forfeited the election. It happened on The Today show. Katie Couric, who at the time was America’s sweetheart (having taken the title from Karen Valentine) was interviewing Bob and Liddy Dole. During the interview Ms Couric asked Senator Dole about his acceptance of campaign contributions from tobacco companies. Apparently, those questions were supposed to be forbidden, and Senator Dole went off on Ms Couric. His mean and impatient side came out strong that morning. I remember standing in front of the TV and saying “He just lost this election – you can’t be mean to Katie Couric!”

While todays Katie Couric may not be as darling as she was in 1996, I still believe that many of us think of these TV hosts as our friends (I’ve moved on from NBC to ABC – all y’all better be nice to Diane and Robin!) who we invite into our homes every morning and/or evening.

Not rumor. What apparently happened was in the middle of the show someone in the control room noticed the live feed of CBS Evening News with John McCain getting make up. So they told Dave and he had them cut to it during the taping of his show.

And if you happened to watch last night, he was even worse. He positively fileted McCain. Bad move John. Very bad move.
