Sara Doyle – Court of Appeals

iconKudzu Vine Interview

If you’re still puzzled about the Georgia Court of Appeals candidates please take the time to listen to Sunday’s Kudzu Vine. We invited (and had confirmations from) both Michael Sheffield and Sara Doyle. They were to be on individually for 30 minutes each. Ms Doyle was on for the first 30 minutes, but Mr Sheffield didn’t bother calling in for his slot. I like to think that he was scared off by the threat of Tim Shiftlett, Steve Anthony and myself asking tough questions. But, I’m sure he was advised that it would be a waste of his time to talk with a bunch of Democrats.

In any event, Sara Doyle was impressive. In preparation for Sunday’s show I reached out to some of my attorney friends for advice on questions to ask the candidates. It seems that one of the questions about Ms Doyle is that she has little criminal defense experience. Ms Doyle addresses this question and many others during her visit with us. (Alas, all my prep for Mr Sheffield was for naught!)

If you’d like to hear more from Ms Doyle and Mr Sheffield check out their appearances on What is Goin’ On. As usual, Wilson is terrific with them both. Listen to Mike Sheffield on What is Goin’ On. Listen to Sara Doyle on What is Goin’ On.

I think you’ll find, like I did (and the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Georgia Equality, among others), that Ms Doyle has the temperament, qualifications, and experience to serve all Georgians well on the Court of Appeals.

You are quite welcome, Jen! I hope she prevails.

I admit that I struggled between Sheffield and Doyle because I felt like the COA needed someone who knew what it was like to represent a criminal defendant (as opposed to all the former prosecutors on the bench).

Each defendant receives a “free” appeal and so many opinions that come back are complete BULLSHIT with no regard for the 4th Amendment.

That being said, Doyle impressed me. She appeared to be very thoughtful about the law, the judicial process and politics in general. She’s got my vote.

    Thanks Catherine!

And when Catherine says “all Georgians”, she means “ALL Georgians”. I refer you to the AJC article on the Doyle-Sheffield debate: http://www.ajc.com/search/content/printedition/2008/11/24/appeals.html?cxntlid=inform_artr

The part that chilled my blood was the following:

“Though the judicial race is nonpartisan, Sheffield often mentions he is a Republican. In e-mails to supporters, his campaign said Sheffield ‚Äúupholds traditional Georgia values, including our law maintaining marriage only between a man and woman.‚Äù

Sheffield said he and his wife, Susan, are actively involved in Georgia Right to Life, which has endorsed his candidacy. Sheffield also answered Georgia Right to Life and the Georgia Christian Alliance questionnaires of the judicial candidates.”
