Update on Alaska Senate Race

icon...and Mark Begich now has a 3 vote lead over Sen. Ted Stevens. According to dKos, the districts to be counted later this week are favorable to Begich. I'm sure we'd all love love love to take this seat.

UPDATE: After yesterday's counting, Begich is up by 814.

  • Whoo hoo! We might just get to magic 60 after all!

  • Something to consider...if we get to 59, not counting Lieberman, then he will stay to get to 60. If we get to 58 he goes.

And for a little more bizarro-world action, it isn't hard to imagine a situation where right now we would be celebrating President-elect Lieberman.

  • I'll take 58 / 59 without Lieberman. And then put the fear of God Almighty into the hearts of Collins, Lindsay Graham, Arlen Specter, and anyone else we can get our mitts on.

I think it would also be wise for Reid et. al to draw a matrix of where they can steal votes from the Republican Caucus on various issues.

Isaakson can be stolen for transportation (rail) projects I believe, Graham on judicial (let him call for "uperdown" and then chicken out of the actual vote for all we care), Specter for decent appropriations, and so on.

Oh, and Lieberman can't be in any position to investigate Obama. He's shown himself incapable of going against his Republican friends, but is probably quite happy to stab us in the back *again.*

  • I agree with odinseye2k. The 60 number would be a great public relations coup, but it's a vote by vote 60 that we need. We can pick off a few moderate Republicans occasionally, and we will lose a few moderate Democrats occasionally, too.

And, I think the bigger public relations coup will be "Hey! Look! Our party grew a backbone and kicked this guy out!"

  • I am convinced that if we were to get to 60 (with Lieberman), we could convince *one* of the Class III Senators to switch (Specter perhaps?) giving us 60.

Still, even with 59 or 58, that's a good strong majority.

  • Bullsh*t Obama.

I mean, I know this fits with his post-partisanship and his consensus building style and he isn't dumb, but COME. On...

    Seriously.

BTW: I would like to point you towards this article too, just to show how similar The Big O and The Pel-O are in their styles.

(The Pel-O = Pelosi. I like the rhyme scheme of the Big O and the Pel-O).
