DeMinted

icon_money3.jpgIn the last presidential election, Democrat Barack Obama drew an estimated 78 percent of the Jewish vote, continuing a longstanding trend of Jewish support for Democratic presidential candidates. If you’re wondering why so few Jewish voters choose Republicans, a recent op-ed column that appeared in the Orangeburg (S.C.) Times and Democrat may provide a few hints.

The column was co-written by two South Carolina Republican Party officials, Edwin Merwin and Jim Ulmer, in defense of U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint after DeMint had been criticized for his opposition to congressional earmarks.

Merwin and Ulmer wrote:

There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves. By not using earmarks to fund projects for South Carolina and instead using actual bills, DeMint is watching our nation’s pennies and trying to preserve our country’s wealth and our economy’s viability to give all an opportunity to succeed.
