Look, do we really have to add a “Do Not Accuse Your Opponent of Being Dead When They’re Not” section to Candidate Training 101? Apparently, we do, because,  earlier this year, political foes started a (perfectly innocent, well-intended, purely accidental) rumor that Sen. Valencia Seay, who had been ill, had died. Though she is NOT, and never was, dead, the rumor keeps turning up like a bad penny. Not that anyone would intentionally fuel such rumors. Bless their heart.

Here, without aid of a political ouija board, is Sen. Seay’s response:

I hope you filed this one in the “Only in Georgia” category. Unbelievable.

I actually did a quick google search to see if this had every happened before. You know what came up? The Burr-Hamilton duel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burr%E2%80%93Hamilton_duel

Here’s hoping that’s not where we’re headed this year!

  5. Jules says:

Given who she is running against, Victor Hill aka Mr Shady, I’m surprised this is all that they are saying about her.

  6. Melissa Sams says:

    She is alive!

She is. In the world of the curious, this rumor first landed on my desk in the form of an email titled, “Sen. Valencia Seay Has Died” – on April 2nd. The day AFTER April Fools. It took about ten minutes to track it down and de-bunk, but the scary part was that the person who forward it to me had already heard it from two other sources, and the Dome was buzzing with the rumor. Just goes to show you, bad news spreads like wildfire, even when it’s lies. I’ve made light of this in this post, but it was actually pretty traumatic for the family.

A small, small thing for someone to do.
