A quick update from God’s own country, Athens. Our regional embarrassment Congressman, Paul Broun is deigning to come visit Athens for a town hall. (Presumably, he’ll be wearing protective clothing, so he doesn’t get our liberal cooties all over him.)
Smartly, his Democratic opponent says stay away from the crazy. Russell Edwards, the smart young Democrat running against Broun is holding an event of his own, and it’s a good move. Let Broun have his little moment of ego-stroking, Edwards will be meeting with supporters a few blocks away.
Now, if you don’t live in the 10th District, why should you give a rat’s bohunkus about Russell Edwards? Well, as I noted, he’s smart, young, and aggressive. He’s going to give Paul Broun a run for his money, and more to the point, he’s going to do it in an ideologically and intellectually honest way. And let’s face it, you ought to care about Russell because every time Broun spews his ideological yuck on the TV, he’s got the word “Georgia” next to his name.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that the last Democrat to run against Broun left a lot of Athens Democrats with a bit of a bad taste in our mouths. While that candidate might have looked good on paper, his campaign ended up being pretty disappointing. Nothing against the folks who worked for him – some of them are close friends of mine – but, there’s that old saw about turning chicken poop into chicken salad. (You can’t, you know.)
So far, Russell Edwards is doing things the right way – for example, turning out over 100 supporters for his announcement. Outdoors. In the middle of the afternoon. On a weekday. Or, for that matter, encouraging his supporters to stay away from Broun’s self-congratulatory crazy vortex on Thursday.
Russell Edwards gets campaigns, and he gets organizing. And he’s worth your favorable consideration, even if you don’t live in the 10th District.
