Thursday Open Thread

Bible thumping Preston Smith..is a  bad boy

Have you made your plans to attend this?

President goes all “Jersey” and eats a sub. Having grown up in Jersey, I have to say he didn’t go to the right place. Best sub sandwich ever is in Englewood, at the Roman Inn.

Watch and learn, Bitches.  “Poise, as you know is simply a state of mind!”

OK back to the eternal wars. Want to be really annoyed & disgusted & PO’d? Here’s a good target:

Yeah, desperately needed reinforcement amusements. We present silly Ed tricks, the Rave Toilet:

Yeah, of course I’m going to burn for this. But we’ve got to have some amusements, right?

More possibly useful random bits from gleanings:

At least it was in an open thread. Progress.

Yeah I know. Evidently, almost immune to whining. In other local news we might have missed, Darryl Hicks is finally claiming victory over Terry Coleman in the hotly contested Labor Commissioner’s race. From an email from his campaign:

“In case you haven’t heard, the secretary of state on Tuesday certified the election results and I am excited and honored to tell you that WE WON! More than 333,000 Georgians cast ballots for Democrats in the race for Labor Commissioner, and we won by 622 votes”.
    Confirm here: http://sos.georgia.gov/elections/election%5Fresults/2010%5F0720/swscroll.htm

Terry Coleman has demanded a recount, which is his right, but he will of course be relying on those few non DRE machines & absentee/written ballots to do so. JMP

FWIW, they’re filming this little bit of fluff & dreck for TV’s CMT in my county this month (WSP). It’s got plenty of folks talking and evidently it’s an income generating proposition with their LA based vid crews in here. It really makes you wonder though.

    http://www.cmt.com/shows/dyn/worlds_strictest_parents/series.jhtml

But really? This definitely has some age graded expectations here. Strict parents? Ask someone of the ‘Greatest Generation’, (another bit of PR dreck, thanks Tom Brokaw et al), who fought or lived thru WW11 about their parents, (roughly WW1 era)? And it might just curl your hair from the tales of common cruelty and everyday brutality seen, witnessed & endured. The everyday suffering & struggling for existence that few of us are intimately familiar with on a daily basis.

To a man they might tell you that their Pa was a brutal but deadly silent bugger from the old country who perhaps never got past grade school. Stewing silently deep in his cups well into the night, some vividly recalled as poor laboring blokes who were nevertheless secret autodidacts by the light of a single lamp, reading Shakespeare & Tolstoy in tattered paper backs or borrowed books, who’d show up for teacher conferences and regularly blow away newly minted wonders from the local teacher college. And relished this prospect with a brood of unruly kids stuffed into cramped walkup apartments in the Bronx. Well into their 80’s they’d get misty eyed at how they’d work with their dads on this job or that. ‘I knew I’d never survive as the old man had. It was just too hard just to keep up with him. He was as quick and efficient as a machine, I was just a stumblebum by comparison. I knew I had to either learn to do better in school or leave home for fear I’d have to take up my place besides this monumental ogre!’ Some did both. But their kids? They happened to mostly do fine by them too. And we’ll always complain that they were the strictest we ever knew! And so it goes.

Yeah, just testing the size limits here too. But the world’s strictest parents? They’re everywhere. But mostly gone now. JMP

Something new from CAP, an argument that’s been going on well, at least since Clinton/Gore picked it up the last time in the ’90’s.

I like the idea of that trip. All subs for 72 hours. Do we bother with Geno’s or Pat’s? I could skip them.

Since it’s an open thread…this is not politically related at all, but if you enjoy good bluegrass please come to the Red Light Cafe on Amsterdam Ave tonight at 9pm to see Whoa Nelly perform. (They are awesome, seriously, even though I am quite biased.)

    Sorry, PSA over, carry on…

Jerry, how is it we’re not on a road trip right now doing a taste test? We could start on Arthur Ave in the Bronx and work our way through Jersey, down the turnpike to Philly?

Alas, all Jersey subs are second tier.
I would recommend he try this next time he’s in the area:
