Ignorance is the new political capital

I can’t remember an election so full of people leveraging abject ignorance as viable political capital. It’s like watching the whole country watch an episode of “The Real Housewives of…” sitting on their couches with their hands in their pants like Al Bundy, but then voting.

I could prove it with a link to endless videos of misspelled signs held by nutjobs standing around with other poorly dressed flip flop shod just rolled outta bed looking ninnies, but why do that when we have people running for office who I can point to instead.

Heck some are right here in Georgia.

Take for instance Fenn Little, who claims to be a “civil rights” attorney, yet folks who’ve been part of the actual Civil Rights Movement haven’t ever heard of him. Ironically, in a you can’t make this up moment, he’s running against  the last man living who spoke at the March on Washington in 1963, John Robert Lewis.

A man, Fenn claims to admire.. um so why in your letter to “voters” are you calling him a liar?

After all, I believe that truth by definition is unchanging—like the law of gravity.  But, today a whole new set of lies and half-truths are threatening the people of the 5thDistrict and America.  Much to our disappointment, the Mr. Lewis of today has bought into those lies and half-truths by putting Nancy Pelosi and her plans AHEAD of the people of our district. He has neglected us all – the poor people, the rich people, the black people, the brown people, the white people and everyone in between.

While I realize that Speaker Pelosi has become a convenient target for the right, she’s done her job. She’s delivered on her commitments, she’s wrangled the Blue Dogs and the left wing. Seriously, have you met our “cats” and ever tried to herd them? I was at the One Nation Rally, I’m as librul as you get and I was alarmed. Frankly the woman has performed miracles with the Democratic delegation. Anyone who ACTUALLY knows how Congress works would too.

Requisite Pelosi Pander-DING!

Next up is precious, just precious, by that I mean sick. Fenn spouts some clap trap about the poor and the Congressman being a socialist and if elected Little will fight “handouts” that, wait for it…

imprison the poor in a cell of despair, and the very people politicians should serve soon become absolutely dependant on the government to take care of them.

Ok Fenn, really, really so you’re saying the poor want to be poor, and if elected you’ll make sure to stop that? Huh, stop what exactly, the handouts, but not the “poor”.  You have to read a bit further cause his solution is to give the “poor” that old “hand up” offer.

Really this man ought to be writing soap opera scripts “cell of despair” is that like the “pit of despair”. Paging Fenn Little to the Day’s of our Lives set please-we’ve got rewrites for ya!

Dramatic Socialist Pander-DING!

Oh I could go on, it seriously gets worse with the “erosion of fundamental freedoms”, and “crippling our children” (ableist language much?) but trust me when I tell you I think David Duke may have written his website content.

Then we come to the sum total of all that I hate about this year, buried deep in the Issues and Government Accountability page is this stunner of a statistic:

In the Metro Atlanta area, over 1000 school administrators make over $100,000.00 per year.  That is $1,000,000,000.00 per year on administration in salaries alone.

What the hell is he talking about? How big is the “metro” Atlanta area?  How far out does it go? How many municipalities does it encompass?  No documents or references are attributed-just big juicy round numbers flung around for dramatic effect. Is there any critical thinking?

Better yet, why does he resent that a school official makes a six figure salary?

Dude, you make your money suing the government. It’s ok he gets his off the government?  But not the folks who work for the school system managing  millions of dollars in educational assets, geesh they can’t live well. I guess they must too be dispatched to the “cell of despair”.

Hate on people in government service- DING!

When I first started this post, I thought the guy was at best a blowhard trying to make a name for himself. Now I think, he’s just like the O’Donnell’s and Angle’s. Not at all a joke and very very dangerous.

Reading through his ideas for the 5th Congressional district, they are downright scary. Full of jabs at the folks who live and work in Atlanta. Sneering at Congress and the leadership, praising Newt and the Fair Tax. Touting his Georgia Right to Life endorsement, *cough* speaking of “erosion of freedom” and Glen Becks 9-12 Project.

Barf.

There is a real Patriot in the race, a real Civil Rights leader, a real Drum Major for Justice, someone who is respected for his service to this country, his name is John Lewis.

I disagree with Progressive values, and yes, I feel he is out of touch with what is really needed to create jobs. I do not believe a trolly will create the type of jobs, nor the amount of jobs, people seem to think it will. I do not believe the Federal Gov’t should fund trolley projects and such projects should be funded through a healthy private sector which the result of government creating policy that allows the private sector to thrive, not the result of the government actually thinking it can create jobs while crippling the private sector. Education, police, fire, MARTA, etc., etc,. are just a few things that would have REALLY benefitted from federal money, and are much more important than a 2.6 mile trolley. Is theis really the appropriate time for a trolley? Here’s an idea, the Civil Rights museum project was halted since private funding has dried up in the bad economy, but they have rasied about $70K+. Perhaps that money should go towards the trolley. I never said anything about being bored… I’m quite amused and disappointed at the absurdity. Hero aside, John Lewis is past the point of being effective and listening to his constituents.

So wait, a construction project that would bring jobs to the district isn’t what’s important to you? You want to hear about jobs?

Do you see why you are retarded?

So the choices are “generic stump speech” and “crazy talk” and you choose crazy talk because you’re bored?

Sometimes I think it’s a miracle we have even a shred of decent government.

Out of touch with what exactly? The district? His constituents? Progressive values?

John Lewis has represented me in Congress for over 30 years and never once in that time has he voted in a way that is counter to Georgia’s, the district’s or my family’s interests and values. He is a personal hero and a National treasure.

For these, and all the reasons Julianal listed above, Fenn Little will never get my vote, nor a majority of votes in the Fifth Congressional District.

I went to a John Lewis Meet & Greet and for ~19 minutes he said a whole lot of nothing. He talked about race (Dems need to put this tactic to bed) and some story that was supposed to be symbolic about holding down his Aunt’s house during a storm. Here’s the summary: “Yeah, I know jobs are important and all that, but hey, what about that trolley!?” No thanks. I’m voting for Fenn. John Lewis is out of touch.

I actually encourage everyone here to Google “Rev. James Butler.” You won’t find squat on the guy. Not saying he’s not awesome and all, but if *that* is your shining endorsement, then perhaps you’ve made our point for us.

Dear LORD Fenn Little has trolls now?

Yeah, he’s a joke, and will be thoroughly beaten down next week.

I’m always proud to vote for John Lewis. 4th time now.

From http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/civilrights/al4.htm: The Selma-to-Montgomery March for voting rights ended three weeks–and three events–that represented the political and emotional peak of the modern civil rights movement. On “Bloody Sunday,” March 7, 1965, some 600 civil rights marchers headed east out of Selma on U.S. Route 80. They got only as far as the Edmund Pettus Bridge six blocks away, where state and local lawmen attacked them with billy clubs and tear gas and drove them back into Selma. Two days later on March 9, Martin Luther King, Jr., led a “symbolic” march to the bridge.
I am not sure whether the Rev. James Butler, who endorses Fenn Little, was part of the March 7 or March 9 march.

Personally, I appreciate having a Congressman with the moral authority to go behind closed doors and SHAME those Blue Dogs into supporting my civil rights as a gay man. He works every day to help create the beloved community where each of us is treasured as a child of God. If you don’t think Lewis knows that’s going on in his district, you aren’t paying attention. And frankly, since I have two Senators who ignore everything I value and write them, it’s nice to have a Congressman who does vote my values consistently.

@That’s Fantastic.. problem here is, I don’t think that person has come forward to fill Cong. Lewis’s shoes. it certainly isn’t Fenn.

I hate to keep being the pimple on the conversation, but the US House and Senate operate on a patronage system. It goes way back.. way way back. It’s just too simple to say we should have term limits. You actually have to legislate this. So, you need to find folks who will run to change that.

    Good Luck

There is a reason that it hasn’t changed.

Frankly, the quickest way to changing term limits would be to change the funding of elections. But yeah, I don’t see anyone advocating for that these days do I.

I’m from Atlanta, so’s my mama and my grandmama and I think the problem here is that folks who haven’t been in Atlanta very long, like Fenn and this atlmom character and “thats fantastic”, haven’t taken time to learn about Atlanta, municipal government, or any of the work Congressman Lewis has done for this district.

Which is exactly the poster’s point. They are treating ignorance as something to be celebrated, as something valuable and desired. That is very, very dangerous. Their views represent the opposite of everything that has made Atlanta great.

One poster asks what has John Lewis done for watershed and sewer issues. To that person I say, just from reading the local papers, that I know of millions of dollars John Lewis got for the city to help address their water problems. Don’t like what they are doing with that money? Run for city council. But understand your government and how it works, don’t just complain and throw whiney little stones in your rickety glass house.

Yeah Fenn Little isn’t working with a full deck. I agree that he needs to return to high school civics before he runs for another office. He seriously needs to learn the difference between the federal, state, and local governments.

considering whenever I get a ‘response’ from Mr. Lewis’ office, it is a canned response full of ‘information’ that isn’t necessarily true…well, I would like to vote for someone new and different.

Really, having someone be in congress for over 20 years…it’s time for them to leave. We always need new and different people coming in and out of congress. Otherwise, we get what we have – which is people passing laws that don’t pertain to *them* – and people passing laws when they have no idea how it will affect anyone. It makes them feel ‘good’ or makes them feel like they are ‘doing something’ or makes their constituents more dependent on them, which helps them stay in office.

OK, would someone please tell me what Lewis has done except to wholly vote in line eith everything that the Dems put before him? I want my representative to consider how Atlantans are affected by an issue and vote to represent all of us.

Why didn’t Lewis obtain $800 million in Federal money to help Atlantans out with our watershed issues/botch job?

Why is Lewis waiting to vote in a tax increase on Americans until after the election?

Why can’t we have someone who represents Atlantans in the Representative seat in Washington?

40+ years in office and it’s time to retire. That’s what most folks do in their 70s is get out and enjoy life instead of sitting in an office voting on legistlation.

i like how he uses the .00 to make the numbers seem bigger. like when using numbers like 1000 and 100,000 – you really need the cents (nevermind the fact that someone obviously does not value math education – or, like a calculator)

also – someone who lives at howell mill and peachtree battle has this giant “Vote Lewis Out” sign – though no real indication on which Lewis the sign is referring to, or who we should vote for instead

@Margaret… do the parishioners of this church think that by electing a Republican to represent them who believes in lowering the minimum wage, reducing regulations ( like safety) dismantling the education system and imposing the Fair Tax will help them? Really. Cause that’s his platform.

I understand they might be angry and frustrated, we all are. But one Congress person can’t change our economy, our state or our nation.

Thank Fenn for making it clear on his yard signs that he’s running for U.S. Congress.

I’d hate for people to be confused that he’s running for one of the many other versions of Congress in Georgia.

Anyone know how the State Congress races are looking? Didn’t think so.

    Fenn Little troll,

John Lewis and Hosea Williams led the march across the Edmund Pettus bridge on Bloody Sunday in Selma.

Dr. King wasn’t there on March 7, 1965.

This is the problem with you teabagging idiots.

You don’t know history, and you have zero grasp of civics, much less politics.

I hope you enjoy the next few days before Congressman Lewis destroys your boy on Nov. 2.

Fenn Little is endorsed by the Rev. James Butler, who marched with Lewis and King on the bridge in Selma, AL. Butler’s congregation, the St. John AME Church, has 80 percent unemployment. Nobody’s hiring, they need jobs. Maybe John Lewis’ constituents are tired of waiting for him to actually DO something that helps them!

Damn you Jules for making me read that letter! I guess as a voter in the 5th CD I should know about this Fenn character. I particularly love this site – http://www.therealfennlittle.com – details how Fenn sued the City of Atlanta on behalf of the guy who lied about drugs being at Kathryn Johnston’s which ultimately led to her death by APD cops. And this site – http://southeastbankadvisors.com/sebateam.html which points out the Fenn’s law firm represents the banking industry. So much for decreasing those foreclosures rates in the 5th CD.

What I don’t understand in his letter is this sentence “this race is not about voting party lines — it is not about the color of your skin or your physical orientations.” What is “physical orientation”? Does Fenn not care about whether a voter is fat or skinny?
