    Again, Lt. Col. Dr. John McCrae of the CEF wrote ‘In Flanders Fields’ anonymously for Punch for their Dec. 8th 1915 issue. It was widely published thereafter, posthumously after 1918. JMP.

    I think there is a realization about war that can only develop when a nation is born, but from a horrible defeat in battle.

    That’s a great poem. Not only do the Austrians celebrate today as Armistice/Remembrance day and use that poem but pretty much the rest of the world does. FYI: it was written by a Canadian and most of them will be wearing a poppy pin today.

    The Canadians as well. Today is Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth.

    FWIW, I found the Australian way of memorializing war, the fallen and veterans much more respectful and appropriate than the way we do it.
