“We’re trying to understand the bill right now.”

The Democratic Party of Georgia is smacking down Georgia Republicans for their disorganized effort to raise taxes on the middle class.  It’s normal in Georgia for Democrats to not be told what they’re voting on, but today even the Republicans don’t have a clue what’s going on!  Craziness, I tell ya.

By the way, if you’d like to see Georgia Democrats more competative in future elections, you should check out the Georgia Democrats Yellow Dog Club.

GOP Tax Proposal: “A Disorganized Mess”

Georgia – The Republican tax plan in the Georgia General Assembly is undergoing another round of last-minute re-writes before being introduced to the state house. These hurried edits illustrate the deep flaws within the bill.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Republican politician Tommie Williams explained, “We’re trying to understand the bill right now.” His colleague Jim Butterworth (R-Cornelia) said, “It has been changed overnight and I am not sure what the differences are.”

Republicans canceled a planned meeting of the joint committee this morning in an attempt to figure out what the bill actually means for Georgia citizens.

The tax scheme has changed multiple times over the last week. The current version is predicted to raise taxes on all Georgians earning between $20k and $180k. Taxpayers earning over $180k will see a decrease in taxes, according to Georgia State University’s non-partisan review.

“It’s careless lawmaking, “said Eric Gray of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “State Republicans are trying to pass a bill that they don’t even understand. Their current scheme raises taxes of $45 per child on every Georgia family, and creates a wide range of new taxes on everything from cell phones to car repairs.”

The bill is being rushed through the state house for a possible vote later today. If passed, the senate will address the bill next week.

“It’s a disorganized mess,” concluded Gray. “This shell game raises taxes on working Georgians. Republicans don’t even have a clue what they are trying to vote on.”

“Georgians deserve better than this,” concluded Mike Berlon, chairman of the Democratic Party of Georgia.

Word was that besides the DPG, the Ga. Baptist Convention has come out against it, as well as the local branch of the Ga. Tea Party Pats according to Jim Galloway over @ the AJC: http://blogs.ajc.com/political-insider-jim-galloway/.

He noted that the House Dems also produced this nifty spread sheet that shows how it’s really a tax increase for most Georgia tax payers& not ‘revenue neutral’ as claimed by the GaGOP: http://blogs.ajc.com/political-insider-jim-galloway/2011/03/29/democrats-overhaul-bill-would-raise-income-taxes-for-those-who-earn-20k-to-180k/
