Georgia Senate Democrats have crafted a way to restore the HOPE scholarship for 94% of eligible Georgia families.  Senators Robert Brown (D-Macon), Jason Carter (D-Dekalb), and Senator Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta) outlined their proposal Wednesday at the State Capitol.  Key elements include:

  • Expansion of the  proposed Zell Miller Scholarship to include the top 3% of graduates from ALL Georgia High Schools with no GPA or SAT minimums or family income limits.
  • Changes to the calculation used by the Lottery Commission from overall revenues to contributions made to the HOPE fund.
  • Maintain full-day Pre-K funding
  • Maintain HOPE scholarship with 100% tuition for all eligible students with family incomes up to $140,000. Scholars will be responsible for books and fees.
  • Reduction in retailers commission from 7% to Governor Deal’s recommendation of 5%.

It’s time for everyone – HOPE Scholars, the Lottery Commission; Georgia’s wealthiest families; and lottery retailers to pitch in to save HOPE for the future.

Stay tuned for more information about this important legislation coming from your Democratic Senators. Remember – HOPE was brought to you by Democrats and Democrats are looking out for ways to assure it’s promise for all of Georgia’s families.

Looks like Dem Senate Bill wasn’t considered, and House Bill has been voted out of committee 5-2 w/out any Dem amendments.

    So this is over, no?

  2. Stanley says:

    Stacey Abrams failed us all.

She took what could have been a great campaign issue for Georgia Democrats and basically endorsed the GOP plan.

    Nice work.

  3. Chris says:

I believe the plan that passed is actually better than the one the House Dems endorsed in a few ways, which means Republicans can legitimately say during the campaign “they were willing to go with something even worse.”

I just, sigh, *hope* that we can get our act together on this politically on the Senate side.

Now it seems we can’t openly criticize the caucus, because they were “doing the best they can’ huh? No, they were getting punked and helping the GOP put lipstick on this pig.

Frankly people need to be letting the GA GOP “own” this, and we should be walking way from it. They shot down all 6 amendments, all 6!

Seriously you don’t see you’ve been clocked in the head after that?

Everyone should be made to watch Sen. Harry Reid when he pulled the plug on Sen. Susan Collins during DADT repeal. He took to the floor outlined in public all the lies and broken promises and pulled his deal straight outta her hands.

    It was brilliant.

She came running onto the floor to try and save it, and he said-no deal. I cheered my fool head off at that.

I wish our house leadership would have done the same when the amendments started to be voted down. I would have had mad respect. Now, humph.

Note the Senators, they start to punk you-fight back, don’t be complicit in their gutting of HOPE.
