67 Years ago today.

67 years ago today. My Great Uncle Leo Poole stormed the beaches of Normandy. He was a Sgt in an Infantry platoon. Two days later he received a Captain’s battlefield commission. The reason for the commission is that everyone in his chain of command from Sgt. to Captain (that’s a lot of people in between) was either Killed in Action or wounded that day.

My Uncle finished out WWII then fought in Korea and retired after two tours in Vietnam.

He spoke about WWII when asked but never really about D-day. His only response was,” It was a long day. We knew we had to go.”

Our WWII vets are leaving us in great numbers everyday. We hear everyday on the news about our “debt” problem. In my eyes our largest debt is to the brave men and women who have fought for our country. On this day please remember the folks who 67 years ago boarded a boat or jumped out of a plane because they knew “we had to go.”

Gunner, congrats to your Uncle.. my father in law landed the second day after D-day.. he was with the new fangled radar corps and was tasked with setting up that cutting edge new technology on the French soil in Normandy. He almost never speaks of what he saw, two days later…it was too painful.

My dad, a WW2 veteran only told us light hearted stories of the “guy’s” he served with. He never told us the awful experiences he surely must have had. Tough characters that generation.

We lost 5 service members in Iraq today. And all I’m hearing on the news is about various kinds of wieners. But always good to be reminded on this and every day. But I’ve seen nary a mention of D-Day all day. Strange that. Our own ‘lame stream’ media, obsessed as they are with endless trivialities and as ever sexually repressed & deeply uninformed, incurious & idiotic at the same time. And BTW: That’s the way it’ll remain. We’re doomed, Pt. ~
