This is your last chance. Be there.

Today is your final opportunity to speak out concerning reapportionment in Georgia before the called special legislative session in August.  Today’s public hearing is the final in a series held by the Republican-controlled Georgia General Assembly.

I know, it sounds kinda boring and you’re thinking “they won’t pay any attention to what I have to say anyway”.  These are public hearings and your voice is needed.  Reapportionment can have lasting effects on your representation, funding of projects and services that are important to you and your friends, family, and neighbors, and much more.

Don’t let the GOP stifle your voice.  Join me and others as we speak up about reapportionment TODAY from 5:00 PM -7:00 PM.  Your input is vital to this process and  YOUR voice is needed now more than ever.

For up-to-date information and details about the impact of  reapportionment/redistricting check out the Georgia League of Women Voters Redistricting 101 (pdf)

    I spoke:

    “Good afternoon, Gentlemen. Thank you for the opportunity to address you today. I appreciate being able to speak to you about the concept of reapportionment, as difficult as it is without maps. As you know, more than half of the voters in Georgia are women. Many are active and engaged. I am disappointed that you chose not include any of these dynamic Georgia women to serve in leadership role on this committee.”

    I like to be brief.

    Speaking at this hearing will put your comments into public record….it may be helpful when/if the republican drafted maps go to court.

    The one in Cartersville was well attended, and we had plenty of Dems speaking up. As well as at least 2 suggestions that it would be eminently more fair to let a class of Ga. 5th graders do it. Quicker & more efficient too, as I explained to Rep. Coomer too. So no silence, and not a whole lot of consent seen there either. JMP

    I went to the one in Cartersville.

    Silence = Consent

    If you don’t speak out, don’t cry later.

    Because I just bumped this off the top… If the GAGOP has their way, they will bypass a Justice Department review (first time its been controlled by Democrats, coincidentally, since the review was implemented) and go straight to a three-judge panel.

    Now, if they are successful, they will be using that as the first step toward dismantling the VRA.

    Just saying.
