…The Harder They Fall

Remember Artur Davis?  The Democratic United States Representative from the 7th District of Alabama, based in Birmingham?  You know, the district so liberal it has a Cook PVI of D+18, and voted for Barack Obama with over 70% of the vote?

Well some of you may well recall that Davis (a man with wide name recognition, a ton of money, and national leadership posts) decided to run for Governor of Alabama in 2010, but lost (badly) in the primary to Ag Commissioner Ron Sparks.  This article talks about just a few of the nails in his proverbial coffin, but let’s just summarize it as saying “Despite the fact that I come from a very liberal district (and probably, in part, because of that), I haven’t proven to a single person that I’m actually a Democrat, so they decided to vote for the guy who at least nominally is.”

So it shouldn’t come as much of any surprise that Davis has decided to abandon any semblance of pretending to be a Democrat by writing this puppy:

I’ve changed my mind on voter ID laws — I think Alabama did the right thing in passing one — and I wish I had gotten it right when I was in political office…

Voting the names of the dead, and the nonexistent, and the too-mentally-impaired to function, cancels out the votes of citizens who are exercising their rights — that’s suppression by any light. If you doubt it exists, I don’t; I’ve heard the peddlers of these ballots brag about it, I’ve been asked to provide the funds for it, and I am confident it has changed at least a few close local election results.

Talking Points Memo has a great analysis of this steaming pile, including a response by Davis that I read as “Facts?  I don’t need no stinkin’ facts.”  I’m just wondering what the man’s angling for.  A bid for Senate in 2014 against Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III (find me a more Southern-sounding name than that)?  Well if we learned nothing, he’ll fail at that too, because the man couldn’t find a Democratic vote if it bit him on the behind.

He needs to find H Street while up there. Cause his name is sorely lacking it.

I’m pretty sure Artur is done with Alabama. He’s currently a partner at a law firm on K Street.
