Just a reminder

On this day in history, 1961 two buses left Washington DC with seven blacks and six whites from Washington, D.C., bound for the Deep South. They intended to test the Supreme Court’s ruling in Boynton v. Virginia (1960), which declared segregation in interstate bus and rail stations unconstitutional.  Thus began the “Freedom Rides”.  Georgia’s own Congressman John Robert Lewis was one of those riders. More on the Freedom Rides here. Recently on the show Finding Your Roots, Dr. Gates traced the Congressman’s family, and Mayor Bookers-it’s a fascinating journey, watch it here.

Civil, human, women’s, LBGT folks rights are still up for grabs every day. We must continue to fight against power structures that support and condone repression.  They are more plentiful than we can imagine.
