Georgia Candidate Qualifying-Open Thread

State and Federal Offices – Qualifying now at the Georgia Capitol. Updates from SOS for House, Senate,  Federal  all other races here.

County Offices -Qualifying now in your county. See the County Board ofElections for the locations based on partisan districts, benches or law enforcement slots. Final list of candidates posted at county court house around 2:00 pm on Friday. Or, you know, check Facebook for updates.

All times at all locations are same. They are Wednesday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Thursday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Friday 9:00 am to NOON! Sharp.

Any guesses who will be last person to skitter in at 11:55 waving their qualifying check and un notarized declaration? I have a name in mind, I’ll let you know on friday if it’s the one.

Best of luck, looks like you’re going to need it in a couple of those districts. *Cough* HD56 and HD93.

Anyone bring a pony to qualifying?

He sounds interesting. I know that there are a sizable number of gays in the East Point portion of his district. If Margaret Kaiser doesn’t have any ties down there, then the EP folks just might consider Phelps. Good luck to him.

I am an advid reader and I think that you guys should do an interview with William Phelps who is running for State Representative for District 59. He is an 8 year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Combat Veteran (OEF) and he is an openly gay 28 year old progressive up and coming politician. I think this story will resonate with veterans in Atlanta and those who support them. His email address/website info and phone number are listed below.

Thanks for that Trevor, I heard this while out on the road by JA himself. It’s a testament to my generally sweet temperament that I took the call & was polite about it too. But good news, certainly. Dodged that bullet early.

In other self indulgent notices of losses we have a panoply of deaths that may not have been noticed much recently.

The greatest German baritone of our age died this past week, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau:

The racing legend & American automative icon Carroll Shelby died May 10th:

Paul Fussell also died this week @ 88. One of the last ‘thinking man’s quiet conservative’, you’ve likely not heard about or from him in ages. He won a book award for ‘The Great War and Modern Memory’ about WW1. He fought & chronicled WW11 besides publishing studies on 18th Century English lit too.

We’ll not see their like again soon. JMP

I think “Quality Comprehensive Public Schools” is supposed to translate to “not the charter schools my opponent’s husband is currently trying to sell to you as being the solution to all your public school problems”

Oh jeez. Reading the websites of some of these candidates makes my head hurt.
-While it may seem like it should, “campaign” is not spelled “campain”.
-I’m sure this means something, but I’m not sure what: Quality Comprehensive Public Schools
-What do you think are the chances of a Democrat winning in rural Georgia if they list their occupation as: Community Activist?
-The internet is forever, remember that when posting photos.

    News release from Elena Parent:
    ——————-

    Dear Friends,

After much soul-searching, I have decided not to seek re-election to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2012. As most of you know, my district and the district of my good friend Rep. Scott Holcomb were combined in the once-a-decade redistricting process.

Meanwhile, a job opportunity that is simply too good to pass up has become available. I am proud to announce that effective next month I will become the Executive Director of Georgia Watch, a statewide consumer advocacy organization that has worked for ten years to protect Georgia families by developing pro-consumer policies and advocating for Georgians at the State Capitol and the Public Service Commission. You can learn more about Georgia Watch here.

I wholeheartedly endorse Rep. Scott Holcomb for re-election in the new House District 81. Scott is an attorney, a veteran, a father, and a friend. Scott is one of the most thoughtful, ethical, and bright people you will ever meet. When we were paired, Scott and I knew we wouldn’t run against each other. We know there will be a time in the future when we can serve together again, and we are proud to work as a team. As you get to know Scott better as your Representative, I have no doubt that you will be as enthusiastic about him and proud to call him your Representative as I am.

This isn’t a decision I made lightly. Serving as the Representative for District 81 has been an honor and the most fulfilling professional experience of my career. I will serve actively as your Representative through the end of my term in December, and have every intention of seeking elective office again at some time in the future. In the meantime, I am thrilled to be able to work full-time on the policy issues that I care about and that impact every single Georgian at Georgia Watch.

Thank you for all that you have done for me, for believing in me when I ran a difficult race in 2010, for electing me, and for supporting me as your Representative.

    All my best,

    Elena

@Catherine, I’mma going to guess and say there was no planned recruitment strategy.

I hear there is a woman from Hart Co. running around looking for someone to give her $200. RIGHT NOW so she can run.

    WTH really doesn’t describe it.

So, reviewing the qualifying data so far – WTH with the Democrat on Democrat primaries – and I’m talking about the incumbents? As a good friend said yesterday – “Haven’t they heard of scissors, rock, paper?” Glad to see some of the same on the GOP side, but seriously, don’t we have enough to do with the incumbents up against each other?

I hereby relinquish my title of ‘Patron Saint of Lost Causes’ to the lovelies of the DFI. Noted further, the polo shirt Rick Crawford was wearing when seen qualifying down at the Capitol the same time I was there yesterday. I will also note that I just qualified one miscreant wearing a torn ratty polo shirt with a cig burn on the pocket and visible tar stains along the bottom as well. When I pointed this out, I noddingly agreed that it might be ‘clean’ too. We’re just never quite going to measure up here. JMP

I spoke with Bob about a month ago. He’s a nice man who had the idea he should run for congress. It was clear he wasn’t involved in any of the local Democratic groups in North Fulton or anywhere else actually. Let’s see what happens, who knows maybe a primary in the 6th is a good idea to engage the voting base.

This guy is such a joke.

Have you seen his web site? He is not even aware that the 6th Congressional District does not include Cherokee County anymore? Seriously?

His web design looks like it was done for a pre-school teacher or something.

Word down at the capitol is that a real Democrat is going to qualify for the 6th Congressional District tomorrow.

What fun it will be to have a real campaign with Tom Price!

    DFI-fine alert

So I see on Facebook that Bob Monitgel qualified in a snot brown polo shirt. WTH? Seriously? Cut the grass then go downtown to qualify to run for congress.

Suits, jackets, ties, pressed clean shirts that’s what professionals wear to conduct the business of running the state, country, county, towns.

I’ve said it more than once, but we need to listen to the sluts more. It’s been a long strange trip that now I wish I somehow had avoided. Soon we’re all working for the NDP up North, ‘K? JMP

I hate to say it, but this guy was jerking the Democrats chain for the last 15 months.

    4:50pm, May 23, 2012

Dear associates to the campaign and DPG members,

Over the last year and certainly the last few months and weeks, I have
conveyed to you our threshold of support need and my view of the
avenues by which it ought come in order to best remodel “the American
candidate” and restore good governing. This is absolutely a
fundamental service principle to me and a key basis of the run itself.
Clearly, my design is unique to today and not to the satisfaction of
many in the control of our political machinery. We have therefore been
unable to make headway toward a viable 2012 Congressional candidacy.

Last week I reached the conclusion with the bulk of my team that I
would not seek the Democratic nomination for the GA11 contest and
began calling outward to Party members who had been closest to the
effort. At the sequential behest of more than one such person, and in
consideration of the possibility that some opportunity might be found,
I withheld the announcement of that decision through today.

At 5-o’clock PM we will release and post the following letter. I
simply wanted to politely provide you some advanced notice.

    Most Sincerely,

    Jeff
