Women.Power.Peace on Capitol Hill

BfD’s blogmistress Catherine is in DC right now at a Press Conference with the very fierce women of WAND/Will urging those crazy capitol hill kids to settle their spats, and vote a clean CR through. If ever there was a group that the Congress people ought to be listening to it’s the women lobbying for WAND/WILL.  Their conference was scheduled months ago, and little did they know they’d be on the hill during a very exciting 48 hours. Of course no one is sure if they’ll be meeting with anyone tomorrow, given the you know what.

But I can’t think of any better people to send from Georgia to represent me. The Georgia Delegation is a powerhouse, each woman an advocate for a strong world community and issues that directly affect their community. More on Georgia WAND here.

Meet the Georgia Delegation:

Sen. Gail Davenport, Sen. Gloria Butler, Sen. Nan Grogan Orrock, Rep. Sheila Jones, Rep. Dee Dawkins-Haigler, Rep. Gloria Frazier, Rep. Sharon Beasley-Teague, Rep. Keisha Waites, Rep. Tonya Anderson, Rep. Karen Bennett, Rep. Sandra Scott, Annie Laura Howard Stephens, Becky Rafter, Besty Rivard, Catherine Smith, CeeCee Anderson, Courtney Hanson, Carol Tveit, Dianne Valentin, Emilia Kaiser.

WASHINGTON,DC– With a government shutdown imminent, one hundred women legislators and one hundred women community leaders from more than 35 states will gather Monday morning at 10 a.m. at the Liaison Hotel steps from the Capitol to call on Congress to work together to end the brinksmanship and get back to business doing the work of the people. The group is part of Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND) and its program Women Legislators’ Lobby (WiLL), a national nonpartisan network of women state legislators, who work together to influence federal policy and budget priorities.

“57 percent of our nation’s discretionary budget goes to Pentagon spending,” said Georgia State Sen. Nan  Grogan Orrock, President of WiLL. “If we stopped continuously throwing money at Cold War-era weapons and trying to build new F-35 Joint Strike Fighters that have yet to work, we could rebuild our roads, invest in our educational system and provide adequate services for our returning veterans – all without jeopardizing our economy and credit rating like Congress is doing today.”
