Help save PeachCare for Kids
Voices for Georgia's Children has issued an action alert to help save PeachCare for Kids:
Georgia's PeachCare for Kids program is facing a $131 million federal funding shortfall and could be forced to shut down unless Congress acts quickly to appropriate the necessary funds.Related link from Political Insider: Democrats to the rescue:Urge Congress to save healthcare coverage for Georgia's lower-income children immediately. The state may stop the program entirely by March 2007 unless Congress acts within the next several days.
A delegation of state legislators, led by state Rep. Calvin Smyre (D-Columbus) has quietly slipped away to the District of Columbia to meet with newly elected House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — or someone in her office. We haven’t heard how high they were able to reach. The bipartisan group’s purpose is to get Pelosi’s backing for making a federal funding fix that would fill a $130 million-plus hole in PeachCare, the state’s insurance program for the children of working families.

I hope they had a productive meeting. Georgia could fix this problem themselves, too...right now, by changing the law that says they cannot contribute more than 23%. I am afraid that the feds will say that Georgia needs to make up the shortfall, and Georgia will, of course, blame it on the feds. If they let this program slide through the cracks, I hope there is SIGNIFICANT OUTRAGE in our state, as well as other states in that could be in the same predicament.

Unfortunately this is a purely political play. Good luck to them.
PeachCare funding will be quickly overshadowed when the discussion of funding pensions for retired teachers (and possibly rank-and-file state employees) comes to the forefront. There is no uninsured workers lobby.
The resources of state government are limited. Georgia’s priorities are roads, roads, roads, roads, prisons, and tax breaks. Public health care and public education are just NOT priorities.
Additionally some of those heading to Washington also voted for funding more roads and prison cells than additional PeachCare slots. Priorities continue to be misplaced.

Unfortunately, I don't believe this is a political play, rather, it looks to be a bona fide crisis. My understanding is that the state will be sending notices of termination of coverage as early as 2/1/07. That gives them 8 days to come up with 131 million or 300,000 kids of working families will loose their health insurance.

Agreed with Jenna, after some time at the budget hearings last week, it's definitely a crisis.
Why? 273,000 kids and counting

I seem to remember one of the gubernatorial candidates making a big deal out of this...le sigh.

Yes, and that same goober candidate wanted to provide extended housing, food, clothing, and health care to ne'er do wells instead of the children he pretended to want to protect.
Again, resources ARE limited.
