I <3 Jim Webb
Like, wow. The guy apparently wrote his own speech last night, and he delivered it like a pro even after only three actual weeks in office. Everyone I was watching with agreed, Jim Webb gave a *great* speech. I mean, even Pat Buchanan liked it. Apparently the best speechwriters money can buy still can't write anything other than the usual simpering drivel for Bush.
Thoughts?

1) Tom Tancredo didn't seem to happy with Dubya's Guest Worker program.
2) 92,000 more soliders - gearing up to attack Iran.
3) Contractors to fight wars - skirt the restrictions of Military Codes/Conventions.
More big contracts for Blackwater Securities.
At least, he can give only one more of these "State of the Union" addresses.

I especially liked this portion of the speech. I don't think anyone else has expressed this so eloquently and forcefully:
"Like so many other Americans, today and throughout our history, we serve and have served, not for political reasons, but because we love our country. On the political issues — those matters of war and peace, and in some cases of life and death — we trusted the judgment of our national leaders. We hoped that they would be right, that they would measure with accuracy the value of our lives against the enormity of the national interest that might call upon us to go into harm¹s way.
We owed them our loyalty, as Americans, and we gave it. But they owed us — sound judgment, clear thinking, concern for our welfare, a guarantee that the threat to our country was equal to the price we might be called upon to pay in defending it.
The president took us into this war recklessly. He disregarded warnings from the national security adviser during the first Gulf War, the chief of staff of the army, two former commanding generals of the Central Command, whose jurisdiction includes Iraq, the director of operations on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and many, many others with great integrity and long experience in national security affairs. We are now, as a nation, held hostage to the predictable — and predicted — disarray that has followed."

Webb mentioned the “Main Street” state of the economy.
Let’s hope he was serious about helping the "Main Streeters}.

I still talk to my peeps up in Virginia about every 2 weeks or so. They are really impressed by Webb.
He is an old school populist. Fairness, Opportunity and Responsibility.

The man did wonderfully. I was excited when I heard he was going to deliver our rebuttal and there was absolutely no disappointment.
He seems to be a very good, serious man that cares about things being done right. And adults like him are definitely what we need at this time.
Especially to say no to W and send him to his room without dinner.

I saw the entire speech and loved it. I was quite excited when ABC said he was delivering the response. After his, "run in" with Bush, noonecould be better suited to respond to Bush.

A tip of the hat from Webb D-VA and Schumer D-NY to the NETROOTS...

It seems like he ought to be running for president! On the other hand, I was quite impressed by John Edwards' assesment of the SOU speech posted on his blog this morning. He wants to insist on drawing the troops down using the power of the purse. Now that he is out of the senate himself, of course.
