Let's go to school

This post is sort of like a list of questions about the Democratic Party structure within the state. Now that the election for Chair(woman) is over, it is time to begin to look ahead. While many of you already know this stuff, I am sure that there are some who would be interested in learning about how it works.

1- How often does the DPG Committee meet?

2- Where are these meetings held?

3- What subcommittees exist within the DPG?

4- How are committee assignments handled?

5- Who chairs these committees or how are chairs chosen?

That should be enough to stimulate the creative juices for awhile.

Here's the Grumpy Smitty answers (most are actual facts).
1. - whenever the Chair damn well pleases. I think they are mandated to have 4 a year.

2. - wherever we can find an affordable (i.e. free) space.

3. - there is a huge difference between what subcommittees exist and what subcomittees are active. Zero are active.

4. - whoever is the luckiest schumck. Basically, if you can handle the "guilt trip" then you are not selected.

5. - same answer as in #4.

1. They save the meetings up so that the whole group can meet once a quarter for anywhere from 6 to 8 hours.

2. At the location that is most inconvenient for the majority. Really, I think they do polling on this.

3. Subcommittees? What are these subcommittees you speak of?

4. They send out flyers asking you what committees you want to be on, then they assign you to whatever they want to.

5. They pull 5 names from a hat, put them on a dartboard and throw darts at them. Wherever it lands, there you have your new chair.

I hope I didn't give away any of the party secrets by posting the process...

Our committee was voter registration. We had approx. 20 Vounteers from all over the state to organize a statewide voter registration effort. That in addition to working on our own County Parties and full time jobs wound up being too much for us to handle. Usually five to twenty people would show up, driving from as far away as Franklin County. We could have done a better job for sure, but we didn't know as much then as we do now. Chris was very informed and helpful BTW, thanks Chris. Maybe it would be helpful for the new subcommittees to hear from the 04-06 SC subcommittees, help the new guys narrow the agenda down to realistic goals. The chairs were pre-selected somehow, but I have no idea how. I think the problem was that the subcommittees had two years to come up with a plan and implement it meeting once a month, maybe.
