Bloggers, death threats and Catholics
Promoted from the comments. The latest on the Edwards' blogger ordeal isn't good news. Both women have now resigned.
Right-Wing Attack Puts Bloggers' Lives in Danger, from HuffPo:
The ramifications of Bill Donohue and the Catholic League's reckless rhetoric has materialized in the form of death threats to bloggers Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwan. This is what happens when the ultra-right wing is given the megaphone of mainstream media. It is also a complete break down in the responsibility that the media has in vetting those who are given a platform to spread a message. And an Announcement from Shakespeare's Sister:
I regret to say that I have also resigned from the Edwards campaign. In spite of what was widely reported, I was not hired as a blogger, but a part-time technical advisor, which is the role I am vacating.
Update by PaulaG: Here's a video of the infamous "gook joke" remark referred to in the comments. As an Asian-American, I would like to state for the record that I prefer the term "chink".

I would prefer you reference them as "so-called Catholics," thx. (Or, you know, just middle-class white men. :-P)
So this is just a wee taste of how non-suicide-bombing Muslims must feel, huh?

Yeah, after reading some of the comments at the cited blogs, I have to strongly reiterate my distaste for this title. "Bloggers, death threats and Catholics" is about accurate and objective as a HillNews.com headline lambasted at Shakes': "Rep. Ellison calls the cops to snuff Tancredo's cigar"

It's no wonder Catholics/Christians get a bum rap when the loudest "representatives" of the group are douchebags like Donohue.
Or, it's no wonder Catholics/Christians get a bum rap when the bloggerati are so eager to paint us all with the same broad brush.
+2 Fox News points!

The only solution is for us Jesus-loving, turn-the-other-cheek, love-your-fellow-man, share-with-the-least-of-us, golden-rule-following type Christians to stand up and be counted! Start at the local level ("All politics are local") and take back the system.

I am with Shelby about the troublesome painting of all Catholics one brush. However, there is a small difference between Catholics and non-terrorist Muslims: an actual heirarchy. I am not saying the Pope should condemn these assclowns, but it would be nice if AT LEAST Donohue's bishop denounced him publically...or perhaps a Cardinal putting out a statement that such behavior is decidely UN-Catholic.
Even absent such a statement, some of our friends on the left should know better than to pretend American Catholics are all nutjobs.

I can't help but feel that all this could have been cut off at the pass if John Edwards had made an immediate and strong response condemning Donohue and Malkin, and calling them (and their pseudo-Christian supporters) out for their hypocrisy and dishonesty.

Agreed, Paula. Excellent points have also been made that this primary season, it may be every candidate's responsibility to cover each other in the face of right-wing attacks. It should be mutual self-interest - after all, it's just a roll of the dice as to which slime sticks.
It is time we tried to figure out a "line of reason," if you will. There are folks on the other side of the political spectrum that are interested in dealing in honest criticism and fact-checking. These are the folks we should try and reason with.
Everyone beyond that line should be responded to with the rhetorical equivalent of a punch in the face. I think Obama's put-down of the Austrailian minister was right on target (the fact that Howard's own parliment moved to condemn his remarks is a bonus).
For example, it's hard to take charges of bigotry seriously from a man who still believes "gook" jokes are funny.
And about the Catholic thing, it's true. Today it's the Catholics misrepresented, tomorrow it will be the Baptists, and the snake dancers ... well, anyhow, same personality, different masks that they hide behind.

Bless me Shelby, for I have sinned. I have gamed the LeftyBlog feed with a provocative title.
