Friday open thread

bumpermadness.jpg
Clark Atlanta University | January 2007

Paula is traveling, so here's the continuous partial attention edition of the Friday open thread.

• The coolest things for Valentine's Day from Fred Flare.

• Nerds, futurists, designers, geeks and anyone named Shelby should check out the Digital, Life, Design Conference videos from January 21-23 in Munich. The main conference site is here.

• I am joost™.

• Have you signed up for Second Life yet?

• Are you going to SoCon'07?

• After Tasso exposed the Speaker's less than familial behavior, Glenn Richardson tries to climb down from his attempt to cut working families out of Family Day.

10 things you didn't know about the Legislature, from the AJC. Is it me, or is the AJC website whacked? This link is a month old, but I only stumbled across it yesterday.

• Al Gore has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

• Only for the hardcore, the World Economic Forum online.

• Lord have mercy. Is there anyone Wilson didn't interview last month?

• Speaking of voting blocks, AARP Advocacy Director Kathy Floyd said in her interview with Wilson Smith that AARP Georgia has just reached 1 million members. That's about half the number of voters in the 2006 General Election. That's HUGE!

Legislature considers apology for state’s role in eugenics movement, almost 70 years after the passage of Georgia’s sterilization law.

• Dems gain in self-identification! A new Gallup Poll finds 48% of Georgians now identify as Democrats, 8% identify as independents and 44% identify as Republicans. Sweeet.

OK, you go.

Ooooh man, you tease! I go to Fred Flare, and there they are - the Retro valentines for which I have searched for years! SOLD OUT. Oooh, the pain. The pain.

Sorry C. Can I interest you in a pair of pink Jackie Os instead?

Beating a dead horse here, I know, but for those of you like me who didn't get a chance to see Jesus Camp, it is available for rental now. I recomend it highly, especially for those of you who didn't grow up in an evangelical christian family or neighborhood. The type of religious practices depicted in the film, except the "tongues" stuff, where I grew up (Union City/College Park) were not the exception, they were the rule. So beware things like initiatives for taking Bible study classes as an elective. It's the one of the best documentary films I've ever seen, definitely the best for '06, even better than Inconvenient Truth, IMO.

Posted by: BEZERKO [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 09:17 AM

OK, I've added Jesus Camp to our Netflicks queue, but I'll probably have to watch it alone.

Posted by: MelGX [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 09:23 AM

I also added "Who Killed the Electric Car?", which I've heard is great.

Posted by: MelGX [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 09:25 AM

How are you Joost? Does it work on the PPC Macs but not the Intel ones?

And from the Cart-Before-the-Horse file, I'm still hoping to improve our FirstLife communications tactics before I go galavanting off with the flying pigs and talking dragons -- though planning meetings in SecondLife would at leat mean not having to drive anywhere to waste time!

Posted by: shelby [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 09:26 AM

Guess I'm in the stone ages here, I haven't tried Netflix. Forgot about the Electric car movie, gotta see that one too.

Carter rolled the bathroom today, while mommy showered and daddy was comatose.

Posted by: BEZERKO [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 09:27 AM

Berzerko, I'm thinking Netflicks would be great for rural areas. You guys should give it a try.

Shelby, did you sign up as a joost™ beta tester?

Posted by: MelGX [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 09:43 AM

Not sure which is funnier, Carter rolling the bathroom or getafirstlife.

Posted by: MelGX [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 09:44 AM

Love the Jackie O's - I may order the black ones. But, man, those valentines are awesome. Boo hoo.

FirstLife is creepy... Says she who met and changed her life for someone she met on eWorld...

Special prize for anyone who can name the central gathering place on eWorld...

Posted by: CatherineAtlanta [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 09:52 AM

er, I meant SecondLife is creepy. Getafirstlife is hilarious... LOL Access your closet to build your first life look. heheh.

Posted by: CatherineAtlanta [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 09:54 AM

No, I like my TV the old fashioned way. And the currently fashioned (Netflix/Ballbuster On Demand) way. And the recently cutting edge (YouTube/Blip.TV) way. Joost's crappy FAQ didn't convince me in the slightest that I want to watch a bunch of cycling and auto-resetting channels while typing things into search and chat windows. Does it come with a free prescription of Ritalin? I mean, I'm a fan of many things Web2.0, but damnit, people, slow down and think.

Posted by: shelby [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 09:54 AM

The guy from joost was on the first panel at DLD. He reeled me in somehow. I've been waiting for interactive tv for years, but it's sort of becoming the flying jet packs of communication.

Posted by: MelGX [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 10:06 AM

Catherine, don't forget in FirstLife you can fornicate using your actual genitals!

Hey and speaking for fornication, I'd like to remind any Young Dems not "in the know" to start saving up $80. Snow crab, baby.

Posted by: shelby [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 10:17 AM

What is about pirates? Any day you see someone dressed up like a pirate is a good day. And if it's children, a great day. But, WTF? Are those "Target" bandanas?

Posted by: CatherineAtlanta [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 10:29 AM

Posted by: BEZERKO [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 10:30 AM

I'm listening to the "Where are the Editors" video from DLD, and Arianna just said they have 24 hour comment moderators and 34 employees at HuffPo.

Aye! Check out the pirate name generator:

Wonder how the kids in DC are doing? Bernita said she had her picture taken with Obama and Melissa had hers taken with Wesley Clark. Send pics people!

Posted by: MelGX [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 10:49 AM

Morning all! Mommy thinks Bezerko needs a nanny more than Carter does. The boy is just spirited! True, he spirited all of our toilet off the roll and onto the floor, but seriously who doesn't have the urge to do that from time to time?

Posted by: Rubyduby [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 10:55 AM

Oh, and I prefer to be known by my pirate name from now on please:
Your pirate name is:
Iron Mary Rackham

A pirate's life isn't easy; it takes a tough person. That's okay with you, though, since you a tough person. You have the good fortune of having a good name, since Rackham (pronounced RACKem, not rack-ham) is one of the coolest sounding surnames for a pirate. Arr!

Posted by: Rubyduby [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 11:01 AM

Poor Wilson has apparently reached his goal of interviewing everyone in Georgia and now has to reach down to the D list. Guess who's getting interviewed next week.

Posted by: griftdrift [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 11:01 AM

Love Carter's black and white striped outfit - he looks like a ... PIRATE!

Posted by: CatherineAtlanta [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 11:01 AM

Can't wait to hear whatz 'goin own with Grift.

And from my "look what the cat dragged in" file, YET another Cellblock. No, I will not STFU about Cellblock. I made one for the YDA meeting which I guess might as well include some good DNC crap, too. I know Juliana's gizmo takes pictures, I used it last Saturday night on the gga07 one.

The Fred Flare Valentine's site... wow, it's like a flashback to 3rd grade. Loving it!

Also, Carter is the cutest baby ever.

Gallup Poll is suspect...What?...No Libertarians?

Posted by: yardman5508 [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 11:29 AM

D-list? Pshaw! Wait til you see his new web site. Not that I would know anything about that...

Posted by: Amber [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 11:36 AM

If only, IRE, if only.

Posted by: CatherineAtlanta [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 11:44 AM

There's Melissa and Wesley! Thanks Shelby.

Posted by: MelGX [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 2, 2007 11:48 AM

Here's another one Shelby. In an odd twist, some of the people from DLD sat on a tech panel at Davos. It's almost an hour, but worth it.

The latest from filthy prostitutes for road building interests, GDOT's Harold Linnekohl, David Doss and Mike Evans. Have some cajones, elected GA Dem's. It's been years since anyone in the party has shown a spine, and that means ALL OF YOU! Call them out for this idiotic idea that would cost every GA taxpayer!

Road Hog lobby licks chops over tunnel bonanza
Posted by Doug Monroe at 11:52 AM on February 3, 2007

The roadbuilding lobby (http://atlanta.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid:20401)
that has enriched itself while fighting off future transportation alternatives for metro Atlanta has a new $5-billion boondoggle:
http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2007/02/05/story4.html.

State transportation leaders are embracing the idea that a toll tunnel may be the No. 1 solution to Atlanta's traffic congestion, building momentum for what could be Georgia's most ambitious transportation project since the founding of the interstate system.

Among them are state transportation board Chairman Mike Evans; Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Commissioner Harold Linnenkohl; and Jeff Mullis, chairman of the state Senate transportation committee.

The Atlanta Business Chronicle has a firewall, so you can't read the rest of the story. Basically, the public-private six-lane, eight-mile toll tunnel would extend from Ga. 400 to I-675 -- sort of an underground version of the old plan to ram Ga. 400 all the way through town. The plan is designed to relieve congestion on the strangled Downtown Connector.

"Tunneling is very much an viable option, and an option that will work," said [State Transportation Board member David] Doss. "There's no way you could add six lanes to the Connector for $5 billion." ...

There are downsides to the concept. Although subterranean construction would not disrupt Atlanta neighborhoods nearly as much as an above-ground road, the tunnel would require emergency exits and ventilation to the surface.

Residents in swanky Buckhead and other areas might not take kindly to large holes suddenly being cut in their yards and streets.

Not to mention the fact that you could have a comprehensive network of commuter rail for less than half that price. But, God forbid, that wouldn't line the pockets of the roadbuilders who control the state. And let's not forget Boston's Big Dig, which is horribly over budget and -- oh, yeah -- had a chunk of the ceiling fall down and kill a woman. The important thing, though, was that a lot of Yankee roadbuilders got really rich on that one.
