Select works from renowned contemporary artist (and current Atlanta resident) Brian Dettmer will be on display at the Saltworks Gallery until August 1st.
Brian's work is almost frightening in both complexity and pure creativity. Here is the sort of obsessive attention to detail and fascination with nostalgia that, while completely original, evokes the work of Joseph Cornell. Only instead of boxes to be filled, Dettmer's inspiration and raw materials are books to be revealed. In some cases, whole volumes of encyclopedias, medical and law books are sliced, sculpted, glued and formed to a more beautiful purpose.
I've been an admirer of Brian Dettmer's work for years, but just learned he lives right here in Atlanta. It never ceases to amaze me who lives in our own backyard.
