Is UF president a party-pooper with Georgia-Florida game?

icon_sports_uga.jpgThe fate of the Georgia-Florida football game in Jacksonville has taken on a new twist -- with a splash of lime.

University of Florida president J. Bernard Machen is urging the city to curb excessive imbibing by shutting down easy access to liquor.

Getting rid of the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" tag attached to the game has proved as frustrating as scrubbing off a tattoo. The universities, especially Florida, would like to lower the party level without shushing it entirely so attendees can get a buzz if they choose and stop short of wretching on the next guy's shoes.
State reps from Jacksonville were influenced so much by the excessive imbibing at the game that they were moved a few years ago to initiate legislation to combat underage drinking.

Let's hear a lifelong Floridian's perspective from my mentor and pal Outlaw Pete, whose arm would yield gator meat if he sliced it open.

"Bernie Machen, a native of a dry county in Mississippi, is the President of the school annually named in the top three of party schools in the U.S . The only way to stop the drinking in Jacksonville is to (1) have the game in Bernie's hometown of Greenwood, Miss., or (2) take the Gators out of the game and give them a bye. To limit drinking at areas closest to the stadium, as he proposes, will only encourage drunken driving from remote areas."

Agree, Dawg Nation?

As a proud member of Dawg Nation, I am insulted that Outlaw Pete thinks Gators are the only ones who contribute to the party atmosphere in Jacksonville. Let it be remembered: The liquors store in Tempe ran out of whiskey on the day of the Georgia-ASU game.
