With the 2009-10 NHL season bearing down on them, Atlanta Thrashers fans look forward to . . . 2010-11. Specifically, to see if Ilya Kovalchuk, whose name dominates a team's record book like no other in pro sports, will have flown the nest.

Hawks' Joe Johnson might need life raft in free agent pool

What is Joe Johnson thinking? He declined a four-year, $60 million offer from the Atlanta Hawks to get overshadowed in what could become an NBA Hall of Fame-like group of free agents in 2010.

Patriots beat Falcons with their pedigree 26-10

icon_sports_falcons.jpgOnly in New England does its NFL team win by 16 freakin' points and the reaction is: Well, that was a little better, but our Patriots have a long way to go. Hey, where's my clam chowder?

Had the Falcons beaten the Pats Sunday, they'd have come home to a ticker-tape parade. Instead, it was 26-10 for (Tom) Brady's Bunch as the home team hogged the ball for two-thirds of the game.

Georgia Tech wins in a cakewalk; UGA nearly walks the plank

Georgia Tech won (big). Georgia won (little). Both are 3-1 and rated in the AP Top 25.

Who's happier today? Tech, which tarred and feathered ranked North Carolina 24-7? Or Georgia, which ducked Arizona State 20-17 on a late, late field goal?

Stafford, Vick: Oh, happy day for the M&M quarterbacks

An NFL quarterback with legions of fans in Atlanta finally had his day. You know who I'm talkin' bout. Starts with a M? Yeah . . . Matthew Stafford (left).

College Hall of Fame moving to right spot -- Atlanta

If there must be a College Football Hall of Fame, it belongs in Atlanta.

Our city is the nexus of the SEC, which generates more passion among its fans than any other conference, and the ACC. It will draw patrons of the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium once it becomes their neighbor in the Centennial Olympic Park area.

One more year: good plan for Braves, Cox

icon_sports_braves.jpgAfter Yunel Escobar recently ran half-assed to first base on a grounder, Bobby Cox did not hesitate. The Braves manager, still teaching at the tender age of 68, yanked him out of the game.

Falcons: 2-0 headed to nervous New England

These, we suspected about the Atlanta Falcons entering the season.

1. The defense would be good.

2. The offense would be great.

Georgia Tech hopes for rerun of '08 at Miami

Miami, which welcomes Georgia Tech on Thursday, won five national titles rapid-fire beginning in 1983, at which point the Hurricanes arrogantly began referring to their school simply as the U.  As of there were no comparable universities in the land.

Joe Cox, Bulldogs: still ranked but slipping

icon_sports_uga.jpgGeorgia slid one spot to No. 23 in the latest AP college football rankings despite an SEC. Wonder why?

Some voters weren't sure Sunday when they cast their ballots that the South Carolina game was over.

19 points is plenty for Falcons in win over Dolphins

If you blinked or were busy opening another beer, you might have missed any footage in NFL highlight recaps from the Atlanta Falcons' 19-7 smash-mouthing of the Miami Dolphins.

Falcons prediction: points galore (for both teams)

icon_sports_falcons.jpgSteelers 13, Titans 10. That was the final score of the first (finally!) NFL game that counts, and it took overtime for the teams to hit a combined 23 points.

Pass fails, but Georgia Tech clocks Clemson

If you're Georgia Tech, you take this win over Clemson and bury it in the ground, in case someone asks for it back, claiming, "You didn't deserve this."

You got outscored 21-3 in the middle two quarters. Your kicker completed nearly as many passes as your quarterback.

Chipper Jones: an imposter or an aging hitter?

icon_sports_braves.jpgThere are many reasons why the Atlanta Braves hang by an ever-fraying thread in the National League playoff chase.

Top of the list: Chipper Jones, who suggested Thursday that he would retire before his contract expires in 2011 if his hitting funk spills over into next year.

Mixed weekend for Bulldogs QB clubbers Stafford, Shockley, Cox

icon_sports_uga.jpgThe University of Georgia Quarterbacks Club will now come to order. A reminder that this is not a club for boosters, but for actual quarterbacks. Matthew Stafford, you begin, followed by D.J. Shockley and Joe Cox.

If you belong to Bulldog Nation, you are worried to death about a certain stricken senior at the University of Georgia. He is Joe Cox (left), only the most important player on the UGA team at this most important day -- the eve of the season opener.

For Vick: reduced sentenced, haphazard game

No shakin' with Bulldogs, says Okla. State coach

images.jpeg Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy (left) made a damn fool of himself two years ago with a post-game rant that still gets play on YouTube.

The guy can't control himself, so why should we expect him to control his players -- even for a few seconds?

Hudson campaigns for spot in Braves rotation

icon_sports_braves.jpgFor the Atlanta Braves' starting rotation, five's company, six is a crowd. Or so it seems with Tim Hudson's eye-opening splashdown back into the major leagues Tuesday.

Backed into a corner, Falcons trade for Tye Hill

Tye Hill, the Atlanta Falcons' new cornerback, might be gone before he runs through his clean underwear. Wrist and knee injuries have limited him to 12 games the past two seasons, and he could not catch on this summer with the dreadful St. Louis Rams' defense.
