For Richt: no tricks, only treats wanted in Jacksonville

Florida-Georgia this year is all about Mark Richt.

The Bulldogs coach doesn't have to win on Halloween. But, for Richt's own good, the team must look prepared. With enough creativity on offense to combat the Gators' fierce defense. And with enough scheming from Richt and his beleaguered defensive coordinator, Willie Martinez, to stonewall Florida's sputtering attack.

Does Ilva Kovalchuk have (broken) foot out the door?

Good news: The Atlanta Thrashers' Ilya Kovalchuk is out for a month.

Bad news: Kovalchuk is out for a month.

Why it's good and bad: Were he declared out of for much longer with a broken right foot, the Thrashers could have kissed the season -- and probably Kovalchuk himself -- goodbye. But this team isn't exactly a given for the playoffs, so a few extra defeats while he's rehabbing could be the difference between an eighth seed and a seed-less summer.

Ouch! Falcons whupped by Cowboys; Saints next

Some conclusions to be drawn by the Dallas Cowboys' 37-21 spanking of the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday:

1. Cornerback Brian Williams' season-ending injury a week ago is painful not just to him. Wide receiver Miles Austin, a household name only at his address, torched the secondary, during Tony Romo's 21-for-29 day. It must brace for aerial attacks the rest of the season.

Georgia Tech gets near (and dear to) ACC football title

Georgia Tech won a doubleheader Saturday.

Well, not technically. The days of football twinbills are long gone. But Clemson's 40-37 overtime win was just as tasty for the Yellow Jackets as their 34-9 crushing of Virginia.

Hawks tip off NBA season with No. 4 playoff seed in sight

The key to the Atlanta Hawks NBA season, which ignites Wednesday with a home gig against the Indiana Pacers, is . . . the Washington Wizards.

Well, not the only key, but one as large as the ceremonial key to the city handed out by mayors.

Virginia getting better; Georgia Tech is better

So Georgia Tech has not won at Virginia since 1990. So what?

So Thomas Jefferson's school started 0-3, with losses to William and Mary (but not Joseph) and Southern Miss? So what.

What matters when the Jackets and Cavs convene at high noon Saturday:

Fancy this: no-frills Falcons tackle flashy Cowboys

Nation sees Falcons slam, bam Bears 21-14

icon_sports_falcons.jpgIf these Atlanta Falcons follow up one winning season with another, a modest feat the franchise has yet to accomplish, they can look back on consecutive plays Sunday against the Chicago Bears on NBC prime-time that helped make it possible.

Yellow Jackets retool defense, win battle of Techs

icon_sports_gatech.jpgIt was throwback Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium when Georgia Tech played No. 4 Virginia Tech. On second thought, maybe any term with throw doesn't fit.

Breathe easier: UGA back in good graces with Vandy win

icon_sports_uga.jpgGeorgia football coach Mark Richt and his staff will take an unpaid furlough day this week, as mandated by the state. Had UGA lost Saturday to Vanderbilt, Dawg Nation might have encouraged them to stretch stretch the off-day through the rest of the season.

Night time is the right time for Falcons, Bears

icon_sports_falcons.jpgThe first tangible reward for the Atlanta Falcons' awesome 2008 season arrives Sunday with a national TV gig against the Chicago Bears. Prime time and Falcons haven't been used much in the same sentence since Deion Sanders (a.k.a, Prime Time) played here.

Season is twice as nice for Tech fans, extra painful for UGA's

The happiness level for Georgia Tech and Georgia football fans hinges on two factors:

--How good their team is doing;

Georgia Dome will not be home to Tech-UGA in 2011

Georgia is the state's incumbent football power. (Its term may be ending.)

Georgia Tech aspires to unseat the Bulldogs. (May happen soon.)

So, when a third party asks both to break from the norm -- in this case, interrupt their home-and-home schedule pattern around Thanksgiving to open the 2011 season at the Georgia Dome  -- it's the incumbent power that is more likely to balk. That, it did.

Strong after bye week, Falcons unload on 49ers

Twelve NFL teams have rung up 35 points in single games this season. The Atlanta Falcons did it Sunday in San Francisco before the Fox network cut to the halftime show Sunday. MInd-blowing.

Yellow Jackets boot FSU, plus Bowden toward the exit

This just in: Georgia Tech 49, Florida State 44. You might have missed it, what with the second half kicking off around 11:15 after a 78-minute interlude while lightning flashed above.

Vols tap-dance to "Rocky Top" on UGA's grave

icon_sports_uga.jpgOnly Florida demolishes Georgia like this. Only the Gators prompt the question: Which was worse, the Bulldogs' offense or defense?

Lordy, not modern-day Tennessee, a 45-19 winner by knockout. Not the kid coach, Lane Kiffin, who cares more about recruiting than X's and O's, (He kept saying the real stakes Saturday was which school seizes key recruiting turf after the game.)

Falcons head west to see who's best in San Francisco

icon_sports_falcons.jpgThe Atlanta Falcons come off their absurdly early bye week for a left coast game with the San Francisco 49ers, who are a Brett Favre pass-and-answered-prayer from being undefeated.

Niners coach Mike Singletary, whose bulging eyes-wide-open and ferocious hits typified the legendary Chicago Bears defense of the 1980s, has worked magic with an anonymous quarterback (Shaun Hill). And now he's leaning on a rookie running back, Glenn Coffee, in lieu of injured Frank Gore.

Opposing coaches loom large in Tech, UGA games

icon_sports_gatech.jpgBobby Bowden of Florida State and Lane Kiffin of Tennessee are the two most discussed -- and cussed -- college coaches in the South, if not the nation. (Though, in deference to Bowden, some cussing is on the dadgummit level.)

Falcons look for Georgia Dome exit; Tech, UGA may play there

icon_sports_falcons.jpgThe Georgia Dome is bubbling up in the news, a day or two after U2 blew the roof off the joint.  Georgia Tech and Georgia might play there, and the Atlanta Falcons might leave it.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank is scouting sites for a replacement stadium, saying the Dome, though only 17 years old, is showing its age. Blank would seek some public money.

Something in common: UGA, Tech likely to beat SEC opponents

The headlines will say, "No. 18 Georgia upsets No. 4 LSU."

Except it won't be an upset, no matter what AP poll says. (Las Vegas says it better, establishing the Bulldogs as a three-point favorite.)

Down and out on the Matt: It's over for Braves

It ended in bizarro world, with the Atlanta Braves 90 feet from tying the game -- and 180 feet from winning it -- despite striking out 16 times, nine in a row.
