Georgia Tech won a doubleheader Saturday.
Well, not technically. The days of football twinbills are long gone. But Clemson's 40-37 overtime win was just as tasty for the Yellow Jackets as their 34-9 crushing of Virginia.
Here's the deal:
The Hurricanes' loss means Tech -- cliche alert -- controls its own destiny in the ACC's Coastal Division. All Tech must do is beat Wake Forest, which has backslid this season, and Duke, which has progressed from lousy to so-so, and it's in the ACC title game, where it will meet . . .
Clemson, which it has beaten. Or Boston College, which it would beat.
The Jackets (7-1) hoisted themselves to No. 11 in the latest BCS rankings, equalling their standing in the AP and USA Today polls. And while their remaining games (other than Georgia) won't enhance the schedule difficulty of the equation, four more wins would keep them in the BCS bowl discussion. No team in any conference has an easier road to its championship game.
In weather fit for neither man nor beast, Tech was a monster. Rain limited the Jackets' offense, taking away the pitch play, but they ran through -- and through -- the Cavaliers. The defense was shooting fish in a barrel, Virginia's offense having been punchless against weaker foes, but it had dead-aim.
Georgia Tech is a team in camouflage on the national scene, barely noticed as it climbs the charts. Only a confluence of unlikely events could deliver the Jackets to the Rose Bowl in the BCS title game, but it's no stretch to imagine them ranked among the top five when all is said and done.
