Good for what's ailing you: Falcons entertain Redskins

They deserve a break today. (Or Sunday, if you're reading this in advance.) We speak of the weary Atlanta Falcons, who have been beat and beaten up on the field.

They've lost at New England, Dallas and New Orleans -- no cupcakes, or Egg McMuffins, there -- in recent weeks. Injuries provide a partial excuse for Matt Ryan's erraticism (protection breakdowns) and opposing quarterbacks' field days (scant pass rush, spotty coverage). One more loss before the Saints' rematch means wild-card or bust for the playoffs.

Could be worse. They could be the Washington Redskins, with two wins entering the Georgia Dome and a head coach (Jim Zorn) about to walk the plank. Dan Snyder has been nominated as the worst owner in pro sports; indeed, he and Jerry Jones should limit themselves to owning a fantasy team league.

Not that the Falcons can mail it in, e- or snail. The Skins have a formidable defense; even the incorrigible ex-Falcon MeAngelo Hall is thriving. So the O-line must buckle up and safeguard Ryan until his confidence is restored.

Still, the Falcons should pull into midseason at 5-3, about where they were widely projected back on Labor Day. Sunday dinner should be a happy meal for them.
