It should also be noted that this was happening before the Net and that ‘regular’ journo’s were are & remain supremely susceptible to being gamed from various sources & for myriad purposes long before there were bloggers. Or the Net. And they’re still out there doing it. Just follow along the atrocities with MediaMatters.org or any number of sites (Digby for one:http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/) who’ve been following the depressingly familiar dynamic for years. The invention of the types of discourse:IOKIYAR. The dreaded Clinton Rules for the Media. (Meaning the double standard that always seems to be activated when the press reports on them in any fashion). Witness the war on Global warming. The WMD/Iraq debate. The 2 year MSM War on Gore. You could also go back to those ‘dreaded Carter years’ and see what those snakes were up to way back then too. It goes on & on. Bottom line? It’s always been with us, and as the dailyhowler.com reminds us, we’ve got a deeply unserious, superficial, easily distracted MSM that almost never fact checks anything anymore, unless it’s to advance the media approved memes of the day/hour . And that’s when they’re trying to do their jobs & trying to play it ‘straight’! When they actively want to mess with you? All bets are off and no lie or fabrication too monstrous for them to manufacture right out of thin air. I’ve seen that go down more than once. Locally & nationally. So no, the Net’s not the problem. It just makes it appear a bit more quickly & noticeably. JMP

I think I kind of went through what Grift is going through once, when Democratic Underground was getting cranked up. The people who helped “build it” felt some responsibility to make it something worthwhile, but gradually a next generation of ‘citizens’ came aboard and they didn’t seem to have that sense of responsibility. Behavior without responsibility is often destructive.

I think a lot of bloggers see the awesome potential of a community like this, but a lot of others just see it as a chance for their 15 minutes. And there is no police. It’s the other edge of the egalitarian sword.

Grift is probably an awesome guy to play Halo with.

The shorter version? “We have met the enemy and he is us.”–Ga.’s own Pogo, via Walt Kelly, (famed cartoonist, but not from Ga.). Nearly 60 years on, always never truer than today. JMP
