“We’ll start with the more frivolous – the veto of HB 1251.
Serious people said the measure was aimed at a $1 billion indoor ski resort in Bartow County. It was sponsored by state Rep. Cicily Hill (R-Kingsland) and, in the Senate, by Chip Pearson (R-Dawsonville). Only projects valued at $100 million or more were eligible for a refund-as-you-go tax break
Perdue’s reason for the veto:
I cannot support legislation that funds up to 25 percent of the cost of a tourism project by allowing the developers to receive refunds on state sales taxes that are collected”.
Seriously? They all but had the roads graded for this, & everything mapped out to fall precisely in the lone jurisdiction of our sole county commissioner. Who was all for it ‘natch as a ‘jobs bill’. The skids were all greased until I noted in a public meeting last month that both Dubai Ports World (the erstwhile developer here) & the emirate of Dubai were currently bankrupt, and DPW was in receivership. They were all but connecting the sewers & telling the only vague public meeting to barely mention the ‘deal’ that there would be ‘little if any impact’ on our water resources. We had a good laugh at that too. Fortunately? We don’t have to worry about this idiocy this year. Just about guns in bars I guess… JMP
Still not a shabby attendance for essentially 4 hours notice. Good to see everyone out & about. Ed looked particularly cute in a vivid pink polo, a pair of blue short shorts and his ever present 2-3 day(?) beard & long stogie. And I told him so. I got no further argument from him. We knew leaving that Lincoln would squeak by in AK (the Big Dog & Gen. Wesley Clark were campaigning for her hard), dirty & already pre-corrupt Rep. Tom Graves won the Ga. 9th going away & that in SC GOP Gov candidate Nikki Haley was forced into a run off. And Sen. Harry Reid won big by a having a certifiable crazy person (Sharron Angle) win the GOP primary in NV. And oh yeah, deeply corrupt ‘playboy’ Gov Jim Gibbons in NV was tossed out in the GOP primary too. That’s quite rare.
But all in all? It’s been a pretty strange trip, and it’s going to get trippier too. Oh yeah, there’s this in SC too: [Via AP]

Well, it’s against the bylaws for me to endorse one get together over another. But, I can endorse the spirit of the get together…
